I visited the Old State House this past weekend, and it is worth a stop if you are in town sightseeing. It is one of the few places that is open on Sundays, and the historical interpretation was very well done.
The docent gave a very thorough history of Delaware from colonial times through Delaware's secession from Pennsylvania and statehood, through the ratification of the Constitution (Delaware was the first state to ratify).
The first floor of the Old State House is the old colonial court. There is a beautiful set of winding staircases on both sides of the building that take you up to the second floor, where the upper and lower legislative assemblies met. Read moreStopped in for a tour and was so impressed by the young woman who gave us a tour! The building itself is magnificent, but the enthusiasm and knowledgeability of the tour guide made the experience so incredible. Tours are offered on demand as soon as you walk in, so no need to schedule a time or come in on the hour (however, the walking tour, which is separate from the state house tour, leaves on the hour). Overall I had a great time here and would recommend it to anyone! (No public restrooms in the building, but there is one available nearby at the art museum. Plenty is parking available both in front of the state house itself and on the side...
Read moreThere's just a little to see within The Old State House but the tour is where the money is (it's free though). Tours are given every hour at 10, 11, 1, 2, and 3. There's a ton of history with this that you'd need a guide to educate you on. The tour is an hour long but we had a guide named Gavin who spent a little extra time explaining things because it's so rich in history.
