Axe throwing is not intuitive for new players. It requires careful timing and the stumpys staff are fantastic at running their customers through the basics and are very willing to spend extra time with a new axe thrower who shows an interest in getting it right. I’m very happy and pleased with education portion of the experience and this carried me through the majority of my experience. I withheld the 4th and 5th star in my rating for a very specific reason. At a certain point in the night, our team had trouble distinguishing the lines/circles indicating bullseye due to the board being chewed up by many play throughs. I asked the gentlemen who worked there if they could address the issue and I assumed this would involve a spray paint of the original lines so we could more easily see our point value/bullseye on any given throw. They probably thought they were delivering quality service when they proceeded to replace the target boards entirely. We also thought this was excellent service until we started throwing axes at the new boards. Throwing axes at broken in/punky boards is a much easier task then attempting to penetrate a brand new board so the difficulty skyrocketed for our teams. We sincerely expressed that this difficulty spike should have been communicated and we should have been coached on the pros and cons of replacing the boards. Our enjoyment of the experience plummeted and the manager seemed very dismissive of our concerns. The employees simply walked over with their sharpened axes, vast experience and impatient attitude and “showed us” that you can stick the new board with impeccable technique. They seemed more intent on showing us that it is possible albeit dramatically more difficult than the old broken in boards. If this is a bogus complaint then go ahead and ignore it. There are certain realities to the difficulty of playing on broken in boards vs fresh boards. In order to avoid a party being surprised by the difficulty spike associated with new boards, I would recommend having a pros/cons discussion before making the changes to the game board. I want stumpys to succeed and I want to return for more axe throwing fun. I just wish our party of 9 wasn’t dismissed as being difficult when it was clear that our enjoyment had dropped off a cliff after the changes were made to our target boards. I hope the manager and employees understand that their job is not to be good at throwing axes. Their job is to pay attention to their customers concerns and do everything in their power to increase the likelihood of...
Read moreI grew up playing in the woods, going on camping trips, and hanging out at lake houses so I have thrown many axes in my day. That tells you two important things about me: I enjoy throwing axes, but I have never had to pay to do it.
To all the people like me who may be skeptical of such a place, fight through your skepticism and give it a whirl. You will not be disappointed. It cost us $20 per person for the hour we spent there. They have buckets with ice so we could keep our BYOBeers cold. They have bottle openers on the walls as well. You can order pizza or any other food that delivers in the area and the front desk will bring the food to your area which is awesome. Stumpy's does have some snacks that you can buy and some merchandise as well.
There are games like giant Jenga and giant Connect Four to play if you are taking a break from throwing. Each group gets an area with 2 targets and 2 axes so everyone can take turns throwing. It took our group of 5 about a half hour until we were able to get the axes to stick in the target. Then we could start to compete and play for points or see who could get the most bullseyes....(sidenote: what is the plural to bullseye? bullseyes or bulleyes?...ill stick with bullseyes for now).
By the end of our hour we all felt like champions because we could get the axe to stick well. There is something so satisfying about it. If you have a small group of 5 people or less you would probably be fine with one hour, but maybe that's just me. I'm excited to bring other people so I can show them the joy of throwing axes as walls and so I can get some...
Read moreHad an amazing time here with a group of friends and family. The location can be very difficult to find as the signage is small while the entrance is in a corner of a complex.
Place is BYOB but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you call ahead about what kind of drinks are allowed. Certain types of hard seltzers or cocktails are not allowed simply because of the label saying it has rum or vodka for example even though these beverages typically have less alcohol than a beer or wine. Pretty sure this is due to some local laws but it is definitely an inconvenience. A lot of people there before us were having similar issues with this. Would have been great to know ahead of time before spending money on drinks that we couldn't consume while throwing.
Otherwise, we had an amazing time. Reserving online was incredibly easy and the check in process upon arrival was quick and efficient. The staff offers to put all of your beverages on ice and brings them over to your area. Our trainer Brandon was incredible. He showed us how to throw effectively and safely. The staff even allowed us to play for an additional 15 minutes as the location wasn't as busy when we went. We found the pricing to be very fair for the 2 hours of throwing. We look forward to...
