3 out of 5 stars We joined Planet Fitness primarily because it's the closest gym to home and reasonably pricedāideal for someone who may not make it in every day but still wants access to equipment when the mood or motivation strikes.
The facility is impressively clean and doesnāt carry the usual gym odor, which is a definite plus. Since some staffing changes were made at the front desk, the overall vibe has improvedāit feels more organized and less chaotic than when I initially considered joining.
That said, there are a few things worth noting for those considering a membership. While Planet Fitness promotes itself as a Judgement Free Zone, that culture doesnāt always carry over to the members. As someone who used to compete at a semi-professional bodybuilding level and is now rebuilding after a major life loss, Iāve been met with some puzzling side-eyes and unwelcoming energy from a younger crowd. Itās disappointing and counterproductive to the gymās mission.
Another persistent issue is cell phone use on the workout floorānot calls, but people sitting on machines scrolling endlessly through social media between sets for 10-15 minutes. It creates unnecessary bottlenecks and shows a lack of consideration for others waiting to complete their workouts. When I politely asked someone if I could āwork in,ā a standard practice in gym etiquette, I was met with a look of utter confusion and a deep sigh followed by a quip, "I have one more set and you can wait." Then said person took a selfie and kept scrolling on whatever social media platform they were on at that moment.
Iād strongly recommend that Planet Fitness revisit its floor policies regarding phone use. Even simple signage or staff reminders could help reinforce a more respectful, shared gym culture.
In short: this location is clean, affordable, and convenient, but thereās room for improvement when it comes to fostering a truly inclusive and considerate workout...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIf you sign up for the Black Membership in June ~ August, you will be charged an unfair fee upon termination. This is how.
I joined PF on 06/05/13 and after a year of being a pleased member, I had to discontinue my membership because I decided to go back to the U of A gym. I asked the front desk what I would need to do to avoid unnecessary charges when quitting and I was told to notify them before 06/04/14 to avoid my membership rolling over to next month. I went in on 06/03/14 to sign the form and I asked whether they would refund the $42 dollar "annual fee" they took out of my account yesterday. The first guy I spoke to said PF is not going to refund that money and I should be happy b/c they are waiving on the $58 cancellation fee they should have charged for early cancellation since I'm quitting on the 364th day. So I went to their website for more info and it turns out annual fees gets taken out on 06/01 every year and they apparently keep all of it even if you cancel your membership just two days later. It's not a lot of money but I'm just baffled that in this day and age, there are gyms like this that are still ripping people off with technicality. So if you are a member who's thinking about signing up for their premium black membership during June, July, August, think again. Because when you need to cancel in the future for any reason, you will have to make a choice of either quitting before your signup date and take a "cancellation" fee or stay a full year and pay the "full annual fee" for a gym you will only use for a couple months. You will be charged a fee when you cancel either way. Seems like their cheap $10 membership had more flexible annual fee dates, depending on when you signed up but their system is set up to screw their black members upon exit. I was planning on going back to PF when I can no longer use the U of A gym but I'll be hesitant...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreFor under $25/month you have world class free weights, weight machine, tanning, infrared detex (they call it body enhancement) machine, and shower rooms. This is the best deal/gym I've ever seen. There's also a plan that is around $15 a month that gets you the basics, just working out, no tanning, no detox.
Also, there's no sign up fee. And you pay month to month, even on contract, no $150+ up front fees. Fantastic.
The only problem I've encountered is the treadmills at this location (Not sure if it's the same at all locations) really really sucks, old,. very unfortunate. I do high intensity interval training on my cardio days on treadmill and at my old gym (U of A HPER) they have amazing treadmills. But the treadmills at this location only offers very basic functions... Kind of like the treadmills you'll find at a cheap, low-end apartment complex.
But bottom line, this is the best gym/best deal I've ever seen.
#Update: Most of the staff are friendly. There are a lot of older people hanging out here and they don't like people not "spray down" after each equipment they use. I was just doing some workouts in my tank top and some old lady complained to staff. The policy is wipe down when you finish as a courtesy, but if you worked out at any gym you know people don't wipe down unless it was really bad. To the complainers, this is not a hospital, it's a gym. You will see sweats, you will sweat yourself... Go home and take a shower. Imagine all the paper we can save by not wiping down after every use... And besides, the staff told me they wipe everything every 30...
