I have been to Folsom several times, but this was my first visiting the Powerhouse State Historic Park. The best part about the park is it's free. It has a visitor center with an interactive science component, a lovely park to have a picnic at, and the historic plant. I really enjoyed the visitor center with all the archival photos. Did you know Sacramento had an electrical parade? It's something they should bring back. The plant was incredible as well, and several of the pipes had windows you could peek in to see how it worked. There are not a lot of labels or signage, so please ask the docent any questions you have. He is quite knowledable. Overall this small park has a lot to offer, and if you haven't visited it yet you are missing out.

Interesting California State Historical Park includes 35 acres along the American River at Folsom, California. Public Restrooms available, intrepretive signage, old two story brick Powerhouse Building, Superintendent's Office Building with a beautiful red rose bush and lots of California poppies on the grounds. There are at least 6 picnic tables under the shade trees to enjoy lunch or snack overlooking the American River. Museum was closed when I visited, but gate was open to the grounds. Free parking lot on site.

Love this historical place because it still has so much intact! The museum portion is fun for kids to push buttons and learn about electricity. The actual powerhouse is amazing, and the history of how they got everything constructed and shipped is epic. Lots of historical photos. The docents are great - our recent one with a PhD in electrosomethingcrazy was fascinating to listen to and explained the processes that took place when the powerhouse was operational. Very educational.

It was beautiful place to hangout with friends and families, smiles real nature, just do 15 deep breath and enjoy the weather. Most people around there takes there their dogs for waking. There are a couple of tables for eating foods or breakfast, but not sure if allowed to barbecue because I didn’t see any thing for barbecue, but lots of restaurants nearby, restrooms 🚽 are available for people during daytime. I really like it.... walking, hiking, riding .....

The park is absolutely beautiful all year round and it’s become one of my favorite places to explore. I would be here way more often if I didn’t have a terrible experience with one of the rude ladies in the office who gave me a parking ticket before they had even posted signs to notify public of the new fee being charged for parking. 5 stars for beauty and experience but 1 star for the staff who work inside as the one woman was extremely rude.

We really enjoyed two free guided tours here. The first in a the very well appointed visitors center and the second in the original powerhouse. It was fun learning about the significant role this place has in the history of large scale power generation. There is a modest $10 parking fee that can be avoided by using the free parking garage in historic Folsom. The powerhouse is not heated so if you go on a chilly day be sure to wear a coat.
