If you ever find yourself wandering through the historic district of Folsom, make sure you treat yourself to a meal at Hop Sing Palace - you won’t regret it. This cozy little gem might be small in size, but it’s overflowing with flavor, charm, and warmth. From the moment we walked in, we knew we’d stumbled onto something special.
Let’s start with the service - it was incredibly fast and efficient, almost as if they knew we were coming. We barely had time to settle in before our drinks were on the table and our orders were being taken with genuine kindness and attention. The staff was thoughtful and accommodating, and when we mentioned we had someone with an egg allergy, they didn’t miss a beat. They happily prepared the fried rice without egg, which was a small detail that made a huge difference for us.
Now, the food - oh my goodness, the food. I’ve had American-Chinese cuisine in plenty of places, but Hop Sing Palace delivers something truly extraordinary. Every dish was bursting with flavor, perfectly balanced, and not too heavy or greasy like you sometimes find elsewhere. The portions were generous, and every bite felt like a celebration of fresh ingredients and authentic preparation. I found myself wishing I could try everything on the menu - and trust me, I’ll be back to give it a go.
But the experience didn’t end with the meal. Even the little details stood out - like the quirky and fascinating wallpaper in the bathroom, which added a playful, vintage charm to the space. It’s those kinds of touches that show just how much personality and care has gone into creating this place.
When we finally left, we were completely content and wonderfully well-fed, already talking about our next visit. Hop Sing Palace isn’t just a restaurant - it’s an experience, a slice of history wrapped in incredible flavors and heartfelt hospitality.
If you’re ever in Folsom, do yourself a favor and stop by Hop Sing Palace. Whether you’re craving something familiar or looking to discover new favorites, this place delivers in every way. Highly, highly...
Read moreI have been eating here since I moved to the Sacramento area in 1989. Took my mom for her 76th birthday today and everything was great. It's kind of a nostalgic feel inside but comfortable, with 6 booths and several tables in the front and a slightly more upscale and private dining area in the back 2 rooms. It's stayed the same, including ownership for my 30+ year experience and that's a good thing. We had an excellent Hot and Sour soup and each of us got a rice plate, BBQ pork for mom and Chinese greens and beef for me. Reasonably priced, a good amount of food, quality ingredients, served quickly, and it's always fresh and tasty. Whether it's a takeaway for 2 at lunch or a dinner party of 8 in the back room, Hop Sing is a great choice and value IMO. Lunch for 2, including ice tea and a large order of soup (enough for 6) and plenty of leftovers was around $40. If you want a casual meal with good quality Chinese food favorites at a decent price, Hop Sing is a great choice. They do have a fairly extensive menu available, with lots and lots of options including several Complete meals, great appetizers and soups, vegetarian and great seafood dishes, primarily for dinner, but available all day with a smaller lunch menu that includes several combo meal options, Chinese favorites and rice plates for lunch. Beer and wine available. Specials daily. Be prepared for a short wait during busy weekends, but Sutter Street has a lot to see if you need to kill 15 min. They have a small waiting area and they turn tables fairly quickly.Takeout is best picked up, as it will be fresh and there is short term parking right in front. Light rail is 2 blocks away and there is lots of free parking available with 2 city lots within a block and covered parking garage a 3 min walk away...My family favorite for all occasions, special or not, and the hot tea is...
Read moreOkay, you get the bang for your buck but after returning for the second time I was not as impressed. I did get a great first impression from the family dinner meal. You get so much food and it was definitely fresh. Upon my second return, the combination plate (shown in these photos), were fresh but the entrees were not as tasty.
I upgraded my entree to general chicken but when my plate arrived, my general chicken tasted like sweet and sour chicken that had the general chicken flavored sauce glazed over it so it was very confusing to my taste buds. I wanted to add hot sauce and I always add a general amount but come to discover that their hot sauce was overly spicy 5/5 level, it just didn't pair correctly with the entrees.
Pros: Quick service, they've got tons of rooms with more tables so there is probably rarely any wait time. They're quick to take your order, check on you and close out the tab accordingly. You get space to eat without much interruption as you're given a pot of tea and ice water on standby to refill your cup as needed. The chow mein and fried rice is deliciously. Great customer service.
Cons: The egg drop soup has way too many tofu pieces and little flavor. Their fried shrimp that is offered in the family meals is very disappointing, although fresh and a great portion, the shrimp had no flavor, just battered and fried without seasoning. Place looks very "old" and outdated. There's stuff up and everywhere, photos, "art" making it appear like a "hoarded home".
I would recommend this place if you want fast service or if you want fried rice or chow mein, the entrees were disappointing (i.e. Mongolian beef, general chicken, fried shrimp,...
