The Gateway Theatre is a well known landmark in Fort Lauderdale. The marquee is clearly visible from Federal Highway/Sunrise Boulevard, and proudly displays the latest films they have on offer. They have maintained their relevance and status as an institution in Fort Lauderdale by only booking quality, engaging, independent films, usually on a limited releases, often booked just after expanding from their initial LA/NY theatrical runs. The Classic Gateway Theatre is often the only theatre in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale market booked with the feature until the studio expands it's release or in many cases until the feature is re-released months later after being nominated for an Oscar. As an independently owned and operated theatre they are better able to listen to their customers and book films that their customers are interested in seeing. Instead of operating like the corporate run multiplexes in the area, and just filling up their screens with multiple prints of the latest comic book movie or Hollywood reboot. They care about booking features that their customers are interested in and that they can't find anywhere else.
Since they usually don't play your standard wide releases you will have a much more enjoyable experience as you tend to avoid the crowds of teenagers, families with crying babies, etc, that overrun most multiplexes and take away from the movie...
Read moreThis movie theater may not be too visible when you pass by it. However, it is a good place to stop, get popcorn and soda, then watch movies. It's rare to get the theater full. Some of the theaters have newer reclining seats.
I like their policy to provide a distance between groups.
Our favorite is watching movies on Tue. All day on Tue they offer $5/person. What a deal!!!
We enjoy the $5 movie day on Tue (all day). Inside the theater, they definitely need some updates.
The Rocky Horror movie is played here on some Saturdays at midnight. I heard it's an interesting movie show that involves audiences. Please check their website for the schedule.
Paradigm cinemas has reward program that allow you get free drink or popcorn, they also send you newsletter.
The studios are small, however it's big enough for all the audience that wanted to watch a movie. They have 4 studios. They have a rule on giving personal space to the audience, so if you buy the ticket separately, they can't put you next to each other.
The sound systems is great in each of the studio.
Parking is on the back of the building, if you never been there, it's a bit tricky. You need to turn onto the street before the theater, or go through the gateway shopping parking lot.
It's a good theater to serve...
Read moreOne of my favorite Fort Lauderdale landmarks. It's an old theater so it feels like stepping back in time. There are red rope lines, old movie posters all over the walls from floor to ceiling, the bathrooms (or at least the woman's) are clean and classy - there's a mirrored powder room with benches and floral wall paper. The theaters are intimate and the seats lean back.
They don't show all the new blockbusters; instead they show independent movies like Swiss Army Man. They do midnight showings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. They used to have a classic film fest with movies like Some Like It Hot, Casablanca, Dr. Strangelove, The Wizard of Oz - they don't do this anymore but it was fabulous.
I would love to see them do a weekend event like the trilogy of Star Wars or The Godfather like Cinema Paradiso does.
There is ample parking in the back, and some great restaurants perfect for dinner and a movie. If you like to support local, and you want interesting movie that stray from the norm, SUPPORT...
