I must preface this review with, we are not locals. We drove down from Sacramento to see.the Forstiere Gardens the following day. It just so happens the movie Dune premiered that same evening so we checked into our hotel, grabbed a quick bite and headed over to the Maya Cinema. The lobby was lovely with fun game room and a large counter with all of the usual movie snacks. The place was deserted. Only a few other patrons in the place. We got our snacks and headed to the deserted theater. We were 2 of 8 people in the entire theater. Dune did premier on HBOMax that same night plus we are still in a pandemic so maybe that explains it? Weeeell...maybe not. This theater is a relic. The floor was sticky. Yuck. Old fashioned stadium seating. They have not upgraded this theater (like most have) with the recliners. (Although the seats did lean back and we did have a metal rail in front of us so we made due (lmao, so spoiled).) The seats weren't comfortable and my bottom started to hurt so I shifted a lot during the film. During previews: The screen had a terrible shadow due to the houselights above it. For most of the previews the houselights were on. Then they turned down the side lights and left those awful house lights on. My partner finally went and told an employee who promptly turned off those retched house lights. The snacks were not great. The popcorn was burned and tasted weird. We will not return to this theater. We do wish them the best of luck in this staffing crisis though, as I am almost certain this is the reason the popcorn was burned and the house lights were left on. There didn't seem to be anyone with much work experience on...

We went to Maya because we have always enjoyed this theater overall experience. The popcorn and the bar to dress the popcorn and fancy coke machine are big draws. However for a business whose 1 and only product is delivering movies, i would think the movie watching experience would be better. Many movies we have seen over the years especially "classics" are cropped, zoomed, or otherwise shown wrong. Cutting off captions, heads, and credits is unacceptable. One time i complained and was told "oh yeah we know, we have someone going to come calibrate our projectors"

Our most recent visit we chose a 3D movie (Minecraft) against our better judgment. In the past it has always been a poor experience and this time was no different. There is something very wrong with their 3D showings. Double images, blurriness especially in "far off" shots and easilly definable red and blue offset ghosts. I assumed that "Real-D" has standards. I assumed a business would care for the sole product they deliver. Maya has let me down once again.

I did alert management. He came in during close up scenes in which not much 3D occours so there is not much to see wrong. A custodian he left behind for a minute also did not see anything. If he did, nothing was done to fix it. I even overheard other guests later discussing why they had a headache from the movie. Maybe it is the coloring (the glasses did not seem to block the individual colors very well).
