Adventure is a gaff rigged knockabout schooner. She was built in Essex, Massachusetts, USA, and launched in 1926 to work the Grand Banks fishing grounds out of Gloucester. She is one of only two surviving knockabout fishing schooners – ships designed without bowsprits for the safety of her crew.

It was the last public sail of the season, and Adventure’s 97 th birthday. So it was a celebration complete with lobster rolls, wine, and cupcakes. The crew was wonderful, the captain great, and the cruise around Gloucester harbor was enthralling to a couple of landlubbers like us. I have leukemia and had not been traveling in years, so I was quite tearful at the sunset, the brisk breeze, and the sheer gratitude of being there. It was five...

Great sail on a beautiful and historical schooner. She was the last vessel powered by wind in the Gloucester fishing fleet. We got lucky and caught a good wind.
