We visited on a Saturday afternoon in early November about 15 mins before closing. We had a road trip itinerary and we were running about a hour behind.
Fortunately we made it in time running into the visitor center like crazier people. My middle one immediately asked for a Junior Ranger booklet to do and running around through the exhibits to find the answers. My oldest and youngest were just wandering around. We didn't have enough time for the short film but we did get to do our NPS Passport Stamps and also purchase some merch. We spent most of the time talking with the 2 NPS staff. They were both really fun to talk to and they probably thought we were crazy running in with 15 mins left to try and do EVERYTHING and our passport stamp books. We got to look around for a bit and my middle one did finish the Junior Ranger booklet.
The bathrooms were located just outside the main doors to the visitor center. The parking was actually across the street so it was weird to get to if you've never been here before. We were sad we had to rush through everything. We would definitely try to stop by again if just to watch the short film. We were heading from VA to Pigeon Forge TN. Great stop along the way for a well...
Read moreI have been to visit Andrew Johnson National Historic Site twice before, have plans to visit again, and find it to be a very interesting and educational place to spend time as well. The property has Johnson's homes, a Visitor Center, a statue, and Tailor Shop as well as the nearby cemetery where the former President is buried with a large beautiful monument. It is easy walking around the site and exploring how Andrew Johnson made a huge difference during his Vice Presidency and then subsequently became President after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, one of my favorite Presidents. There is a movie about Johnson and a gift shop in the Visitor Center. The house is decorated by the National Park Service for various holidays and features special events for adults and children during said holiday occasions. The interactive activities and wonderful staff make the Historic Site a joy to visit on any given day. Highly...
Read moreTake a step back in time as you explore the many Andrew Johnson locations through town. The tailor shop where many years ago before his presidency he would have mended your clothes and talked politics, explore his home he lived in, then the second he built on his return from the white house to live out his final days, both of which offer free tours. Then ofcourse the replica of his birth home that is located in Raleigh, NC is a must see. After exploring his life through the placks at the National Park Historical Site and checking out these wonderful locations you'll want to conclude with admiring his grave where he will forever be known for defending the constitution. Great for family or just a day to yourself. Everything is free, including parking that is at every location, and each one has plenty of...
