The Woodside Cotton Mill Village Historic District sits west of Greenville's city limits and developed around the mill built by John T. Woodside. The Woodside Cotton Mill, built in 1902, was a major contributor during the rise of Greenville's textile dominance throughout the first half of the 20th century. The surrounding houses were already completed and waiting for employees to move in when the mill opened. The Woodside Mill was constructed alongside the busy Southern Railway and had 11,000 spindles at opening. In less than 6 months it had doubled its number of spindles, while becoming the largest cotton mill under one roof in the United States. By 1920 The Woodside Cotton Mills Company had over 230,000 spindles producing the equivalent of 275 miles of cloth a day. John T. Woodside began referring to himself as "the richest man in Greenville". The entire District is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and includes not only The Woodside Mill but also the mill office, a cotton waste house, a recreational building, two churches, a baseball park, a pasture/common area and a mill store that once operated on employee credit. The mill's waste house was built in 1920 and is the only other building left standing that was involved in production. The baseball field was constructed the same year and joined the local textile association of baseball teams. The mill office was added directly in front of the Woodside Mill in 1924. The Woodside Mill survived the Great Depression of the 1920's and early 30's but, losses began to take their toll. By 1984 the Mill had ended all operations and was rented out as commercial space until completely shutting down in 2006. The district continued to evolve over the decades and in 2021 the historic mill was converted into condominiums and re-opened as The Lofts...

Read moreWe've lived in this area for more than 20 years. Like many places, this neighborhood has seen many changes. Starting out as a tight mill community, it has changed sometimes for the worse depending on who moves in. In recent years with the conversion of Parker high school into an excellent charter school (Legacy Charter School), the remaking of a mill into condos, the Swamp Rabbit in close proximity, some art studios created nearby, and a park planned for the near future, I'd say we have a brighter future here. Increased police patrolling has also been reassuring. Our street has been more peaceful during the past decade. I can also see some improvement on...
