I've been remiss in writing a review for this gym. Before joining Olympic I had never belonged to a gym in my life and wasn't quite sure what to expect. I did a lot of research on 3-4 gyms in the area before deciding on Olympic. Some of the other facilities were incredibly crowded and a bit too sterile and corporate for my taste. And I was looking for a gym with child care that I felt good about so that I wouldn't feel guilty about taking my 2.5 year old daughter along to the gym with me.
I wasn't terribly happy with the other gyms that I had looked at, so I decided to call this small little gym in Gresham. When I first called Olympic, a woman named Nicky picked up the phone. And unlike every other gym I had spoken to , Nicky seemed genuinely interested in talking to me. She patiently answered all of my (multiple) questions about childcare, which included pricing (something I found other gyms refused to share unless they could twist my arm in person).
That first call with Nicky got me to the gym for the first time, where I was greeted by Chris who, again, showed a genuine interest in understanding what I was looking for in a gym. There was zero pressure, he spent an amazing amount of time giving me a tour of the facility and telling me about all of the offerings.
I was particularly pleased with the flat monthly child care fee, which has saved me a lot of money and made it possible (even easy) for me to work out while still caring for my daughter).
I joined the next day, and this personal treatment that I received from day one has absolutely continued.
I even got a free personal training session. There was no pressure to sign up for anything more, but the information I was given was incredibly useful in understanding how to exercise right and create a routine that worked for me and my goals. This gym has a lot of options that are tailored for people with all types of schedules and needs - there's a lot of flexibility and no judgment.
My daughter loves the day care program (almost as much as she loves the family swim time at the pool which we take advantage of several times a week). On gym days my daughter wakes up saying "Let's go see Shannon today! (Shannon's one of the child care providers at the gym) and she has made several little friends at day care that she enjoys playing with.
For me, the classes are great and I've explored new things like aqua fit classes in the pool and a foam roller stretch class, which I feel have relieved a lot of muscle tension and pain that I was previously happening.
I like the fact that they actively ask for feedback about classes and other aspects of the gym. The owners and managers are very accessible and appreciative of your feedback, There's also a cool app they have for your phone that makes it easy to provide feedback, see the class schedules, and more.
The gym is never crowded, I never have to wait for machines. The people are friendly, and it has kept me coming back - a big reason for the almost 15 pounds I've lost since joining about two months ago.
I'm often in there in the mornings with my daughter, but occasionally come in late at night too - I love the 24 hour schedule during the week which lets me come into the gym on my own schedule.
My wife realized how well this was working for me and my daughter and she's a member now too. Joining Olympic Gym was one of the best decisions I've made for me and my family in a...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI belong to 5 gyms in Oregon and Washington ...I have been with Lyft since they were called Olympic in 2019...they had a skeleton crew and the pool was not opened... Julie and Chris were the only people I saw, maybe a couple others.....maybe Tom the maintenance man... I walked on the treadmill for 5, 10 or 15 minutes at a time, to rehabilitate a torn meniscus and much later when the pools were open I joined the water exercise classes ...... I have my favorite instructors...I love it when the instructors challenge us by using different music...playlists matter. I love it when they get in the water as a student so they know how to instruct when they are on deck... There is 12 to 42 times more resistance in the water than there is in the air depending on how hard you push.. You burn between 400 and 500 calories an hour in a water exercise class...you only weigh 30 percent of your body weight. Great for non swimmers and recovery from injuries in my humble opinion. They have a great staff....and it's great to be able to sign up for a class online and just scan the bar code to get in the club. I'd like to mention all the fantastic water exercise instructors..(they put up with a lot of chatter during the class.. I have to personally stifle myself because it is a social thing..exercising with a group. It's a community...) Anyhow.... You have some talented instructors who use different playlists to modulate tempo and give students a challenging workout...All are good..however some stand out Lisa, Amanda, Kris, Robin, Dixie, Diane these instructors really put their heart and souls into the workout! Thank you for your inclusive professionalism and making it fun!! Thanks, actually a GIGANTIC THANKS to Maka and Chris, and Keiko and Jeff and Gabe and Beau and Gavin...your friendly welcoming presence at the front desk and throughout the club makes coming to the club pure joy!! (One emotion that you cannot fake!) Helping members build better bodies and stronger minds... One smile at a time!!! For me, 29 pounds of FAT gone on my body and 15 pounds of muscle gained šŖ!!! Keto and intermittent fasting...Thanks to Dr. Berg !! It's a lifestyle! This doesn't happen overnight...
I am AMAZED!!! AND SO...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI would like to give this gym higher marks, because it is a family owned operation (which is why I chose them to begin with). The truth is that their facilities are old and their entrance is actually dangerous and very hard on someone with a bad knee (very steep cement staircase to get inside and then another staircase inside to get back down to the pool).
Mostly though, their policies and what I experienced when trying to cancel today did not feel "family owned". I wish I had read some of the other reviews before I went to this Gym last summer.
When I signed up, I chose to pay month to month (and I pay more per month) so we could cancel when we wanted to without hassle. I do not feel that it was well explained that I would actually be charged a full additional month as soon as I wanted to cancel no matter when that was.... I also had to contact a third party company to do the cancellations as they do not handle this for their members themselves.
In the end, I will have to send a written letter to another company (in Arkansas) to initiate the cancellation. In addition, and maybe this is normal for Gyms, but I pre-paid for 3 45 minute PT sessions for my son as a gift for his birthday (which he never used as he ended up going out for a sport at his high school and worked with the trainers there) and today I found out this was also non-refundable.
I feel like it would have been the right thing to do to issue the refund (even a partial refund) on the PT - since this was money they received from us - for services we never had them provide.
Overall, I feel very disappointed in how little they seemed to care ... many lessons learned and I can not personally...
