Really moving spot. Right off the highway along Emancipation Drive (first left coming into Hampton University), this historic tree has an interpretive sign, a Historic Landmark plaque for the university itself, and then a decorative fence surrounding the space. There's also a shed, two building foundations, and an outdoor brick cooking contraption... I'm not sure what any of those have to do with the Emancipation Oak, but they're there and they're unexplained. The sign is burned by the sun and needs to be replaced in the near future. But all that is FYI only - the magic of the spot perseveres. I spent ten minutes walking around the perimeter, and since the fence was open, spent some time beneath the MASSIVE tree limbs as well. I found it to be a solemn place, and a beautiful tree, a neat little spot that I'm astounded was preserved - but am glad it was. Worth stopping by on a nice day. I would highly recommend for history and plant enthusiasts alike, but anyone can really enjoy this spot. There is a small car park where you can leave your vehicle, and walk around the fence to see the massive live oak up close.
