We stopped by on our way from Maine to FL for a much needed leg stretch for our 3-year-old (and us, it's a long drive!). The playground itself is amazing; there are so many different little unique areas for kids to play, exercising both their bodies and their imaginations. I especially liked the music scape! Not only that, the playground is engineered to be wheelchair friendly and accessible for disabled kids of all ages, including a wheelchair friendly swing! However, in order to make it wheelchair accessible they had to pave over most of the ground and pathways between playscapes. While I understand the need to pave to make it wheelchair accessible, they went a little overboard with the concrete, paving quite a bit more than necessary. Additionally, they added a huge, paved parking lot. The end result is a bit clinical and cold. I left feeling a bit sad for the natural elements that could have been preserved and the environmental impact this will have, as well as the missed opportunity to show kids ways to live a bit more environmentally friendly and still be open and accessible to...
Read moreThe only decent playground in Harrisonburg. No monkey bars. The slides are all kind of slow. The race track is awesome, though.
What ruins the park is that the city closes it when it is below freezing. Besides being absolutely ridiculous, because low temperatures do not make playgrounds more dangerous, it is also outlandish because it is below freezing a third of the year in Harrisonburg making the park completely inaccessible.
The last straw -- this actually kind of forced my hand on leaving Harrisonburg -- came in late March. For three days in a row it was above 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The snow had all melted off the ground by the end of the first day. Yet the city kept the park fenced off with a big sign saying PARK CLOSED, because "the ground is still too frozen from a long winter." (Yes, I called the city Parks and Rec Department while my five-year old was in hysterics that we couldn't go to the park on a summer-esque, sunny day, and this is what the Director told me.)
I took my daughter there anyway, hopping the fence and teaching her about civil disobedience in the face of...
