Bomboy's Homemade Candy — Attraction in Havre de Grace

I love buying all of my holiday chocolates and gifts from Bomboys. I even have fun buying the grab bags when they gave them.

However, I was recently disappointed in a gift I purchased. My son and DIL moved to CA a few years ago. I wanted to take/ship crabs to them, but it was just too costly. I went to Bomboys to grab some of their favorite chocolates. They had this really cute “smash crab”. It was a big milk chocolate crab, filled with other chocolates and it even came with a crab mallot. It was priced at $36.99. They were tickled by the cute idea and had fun cracking it. Much to our disappointment, the chocolate covered pretzels were all stale. This caused some of the other chocolates to have an “off” taste. All the candy inside had to be thrown out. It was a cute idea, but a huge cost for candy that had to be tossed.

This one item is the only reason I gave 4 stars. They will still always have my business and recommendations; I’ll just have to stay away from “cute” items.

Edit: I know that the owners would have made this right because they stand behind their products. However, we were in California for 10 days and I just didn’t think about bringing it back here. I just wanted to point out that maybe the pretzels inside weren’t a good idea. They just don’t hold up. Looking forward to coming in before the holidays and grabbing an assortment of chocolates...

I grew up in Maryland and my family would always come to Bomboys for a treat every once in awhile. We eventually moved to Pennsylvania and I haven’t been back to Bomboys in years. My husband and I went on vacation to Virginia and on our way back home I thought it would be a great idea to stop by and get some candy and have my husband try it out as well! He was so excited because I’ve talked very highly about this place. I checked the hours online which showed 12-9, perfect! We got there around 6:30 and it was closed. Confused, I checked it again and it said open, but it was for the ice cream place. In order to get to the hours for the candy store you had to actually click on the website and go to the bottom to see that they closed at 6. When googling hours for the candy store it shouldn’t say 12-9 and make people like us assume it would still be opened. We sat through hours of traffic just for this candy and we couldn’t even get any. We did however go to get some ice cream and the guy who took our order was a young man who looked like he hated being at his job. I was upset when I found out he was taking our order instead of the other girls, they looked way friendlier then he did. I forget his name, but I wouldn’t want him to be...

While certain candies and ice cream might be delicious, the customer service and knowledge of products was not up to par. I was in both the candy and ice cream shops yesterday and made purchases for family members at both. While purchasing candies I asked the lady running the cashier, "does your dark chocolate have dairy in it?" In quite the condescending tone she chuckled and said "Well honey... ALL chocolate has dairy in it." Realizing her ignorance, I simply said hmm and went on my way. As I'm walking out of the door with my little one, I hear her telling someone "she just asked..."

Here's the thing- I have a dairy free child and I myself have lived the dairy free diet for some time now. So perhaps all of Bomboys chocolates has dairy in it, but news flash: quite a few brands of dark chocolate are dairy free because true dark chocolate IS dairy free. There's no dairy in cocoa, just what you add. So next time you want to speak to a customer as if they lack intelligence, you might want to be sure you understand the products you sell and how they compare to...
