This park was named in honor of Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole who was the prince of the Kingdom of Hawaii until it was overthrown by a coalition of American/European interests in 1893. Quiet and secluded, it is truly a hidden gem. And because it is located just minutes from Hilo's best restaurants and even has some tasty food trucks next to it's parking lot, it is an ideal spot to enjoy lunch. There are many shady picnic tables that overlook Reeds Bay and the spring fed Ice Pond. And chances are excellent that you will have these magnificent views all to yourself.

Great spot for snorkeling! We saw sea turtles, several types of fish, and sea urchins. The depths change drastically and quickly across the bay, so be careful with kids, as they would need to be able o swim back to more shallow areas if they come across a deeper patch. Also make sure you wear water shoes! The rocks can...
