This place used to be one of our favorite shops, but we haven't been back because one of the managers was extremely rude, the one with very short hair. We bought a bag of avocados and once they were ripped, I opened up a couple of them and they were both bad inside. They look perfectly fine from the outside but are bad inside. So we went back to return all of them. We talked to the guy first, he seemed reasonable and told us that we can exchange since there was obviously something wrong with the avocados. He went back to the back stock for a little bit while we were shopping for more produce, then the short hair manager came out with him. She went behind the counter and he came to talk to us, now he said they couldn't do the exchange because it's been a week. Ok, I had to wait for the avocado to be ripped until I cut them open, it doesn't work if I cut them the next day after I bought them. Obviously he went in to check with the manager, and she said no. So we went to the checkout and tried to talk to her, she refused to talk to us and made this poor guy to be in the middle who initially tried to help us, but he also had to listen to her. What made me mad was not they wouldn't exchange the avocados, it was the rude manager, who does she think she is?! A store manager that doesn't understand what customer service is. We left the bag of avocados with them, left the store and never...

What a wonderful health food store & gift shop. If you're wondering: "Locavore" is a person whose diet consists only or principally of locally grown or produced food. Add a bunch of uniques gift ideas by Big Island artists and life is complete.
Located in the heart of old town Hilo on Kilauea Avenue is where you'll find Locavore or as locals will know it's next to Ben Franklin. The staff of Sam and Audrey were genuinely kind and welcoming. I was most impressed with their knowledge of products and pride in what they had to offer. My sister (who I was visiting) purchased fresh non-GMO produce and pickled namasu. Since I was visiting Hilo I chose unique stickers and postcards to take home with me.
I really felt a warm peaceful vibe while browsing around. On a Sunday afternoon it was filled with curious customers. Health conscience hippies, those looking for local arts & crafts, and a few locals living la viva Locavore lifestyle. What a fab gem in old town Hilo. Til next time...

Read moreI was really surprised with this one and was very disappointed about my recent experience. I've been a customer for almost year. The boutique style shop offers items at a higher price point but that is OK for me since it products are local and of quality. The store attendants were also very nice.
Recently, I bought an ice cream that didn't quite agree to my taste; it was so tart that I couldn't really enjoy it. I called the shop thinking that it won't be a big deal since I am already paying premium for its products. I assumed part of their mission is to provide a full positive customer experience.
Unfortunately, the "owner" in a passive aggressive tone told me that they won't do an exchange or a refund because its falls under customer preference and she was VERY SORRY. This was the first time I requested an exchange. Sadly the "boutique" facade doesn't live up to the hype. In my book any business willing to lose a customer over $8 is trash. Even Aldi takes exchanges without question. I was talking up this place to my friends and family, but not anymore....
