We’d been to Pineapples about 9 years ago. We returned by chance tonight after the recent reviews helped us remember how good this place is was/is.
Tonight’s visit was just as good as the first one, and possibly better!
Before you come, you need to prepare yourself to either eat several meals or fight and somehow win a battle against the temptation to do so - because the options are so great and the decision to choose between items is so hard.
The calamari appetizer was absolutely delicious, some of the best we’ve ever had. The fish was tender without any of the rubbery or chewy texture that many other similar dishes might present.
We highly recommend the daily fish catch - today’s fish was Ono, which paired perfectly with the coconut breading and beurre Blanc sauce.
The teriyaki flank steak was also a delicious meal. The sauce was very flavorful, and topped off with perfectly grilled pineapple.
The pumpkin curry, however, fell a bit flat. The concept was good, and the ingredients were fresh, but the curry broth was lacking in seasoning and salt. Still tasty, but just not hitting the mark like the other dishes.
Our server was attentive and friendly. Drinks were refilled quickly, and orders arrived quickly and piping hot.
I’d consider making a reservation if you are dining with a group. There are some options to move tables around for larger groups (more than 5-6 people) but it would take some planning for the staff.
All in all, this place is a winner- don’t skip it on your next visit to Hilo.
Adding a PS as of two days post initial review… we ate here again tonight and ALL Of the dishes were home runs. Please try the grilled chicken sandwich, the lava burger, the fish and chips, and the portobello mushroom sandwich. SO. FREAKING. GOOD.
Barbara was our server tonight and she...
Read morePineapples offers good quality food and great service at reasonable prices compared to other medium/high end dining establishments on the island. The dishes we ordered during our visit were prepared well and presented attractively.
Highlights from our meal included the chicken sandwich and fish and chips, prepared in a Furikake style that added an interesting twist. The Englishman dining with us said it was the best fish and chips he’s ever had. Hilo plate was also quite good and came with a little bit of evening when also having great taste and portions. The catch of the day sandwich and nachos lacked distinctive flavors and creativity. For the chicken sandwich, I recommend switching to pepper jack cheese in place of the standard provolone to complement the other ingredients. Kids waters are presented great with pineapple and a decorated straw The thousand island like dipping sauce was great along with the well cooked French fries.
Our server ensured a satisfactory dining experience, especially with accommodating an allergy request at the table.
The atmosphere is open and airy. The restaurant tends to be busy, so I advise making reservations in advance or being prepared for a wait we walked up to test the wait times and it was about 30 minutes. Fell free to talk around Downtown Hilo in the meantime. The host will give you a phone call once the table is ready. The open-wall design provides a pleasant breeze and casual ambiance.
Overall, I would recommend dining here for reasonably priced, well-prepared meals in an appealing setting. Talking to your server to get their recommendations is recommended especially with unique dishes that the...
Read moreDecided to stop by for dinner after our guide for Ziplining recommended it. Absolutely the best decision! There was a line waiting to get in for tables, a good sign from the start. My wife and I decided to just eat in the bar which is walkin and pick your spot. We found a spot on the bar right in front of the bartender. It was the perfect spot. The bartender was super chill and entertaining. He was very helpful on deciding what to eat and drink. We ended up getting the Fresh Catch Fish and Chips ( Happend to be swordfish) and the Hilo Loco Plate. Both were absolutely Delicious! The Fish n Chips were probably the best I've ever had! The Loco Plate had amazing ribs, pulled pork, rice and an amazing Slaw! For the drink we got the Pineapple Pow! Sooo good! A drink out of an actual Pineapple! I loved that after you finished the drink, you could dig out and eat more of the Pineapple to get even more flavor from the drink that soaked into the Pineapple. I wish I remembered the bartender's name, but He was awesome and gave us some samples of the other drinks they make. Overall, probably my favorite experience eating out on the Island! Oh, I almost forgot that they had some live music which was great as well to add onto the ambiance of the whole experience. Definitely recommend if you're looking for some grub and...
