Don't miss the rare opportunity to visit this lovely historic theater in the heart of downtown Hilo! While most of the once-abundant early cinema houses have been razed to make way for cookie-cutter multiplexes, the Palace Theater is one of the few examples left, and it contains many of the elements that characterize the style: opulent exterior, painted ceiling, colorful tiled walls, decorative cascading fountains in the lobby, live organ music, and giant velvet curtains. The Palace offers a great selection of independent films, Hollywood Golden Age classics, silent movies, and live concerts. Arrive early so you can hear Ron Mazurowski play local Hawaii classics like the "Hilo March" on the mighty pipe organ. Nearby street parking is free and plentiful at most times, especially in the evening. Conveniently close to a number of restaurants, cafes, and the Tsunami Museum. As of July 2017, no AC (which I didn't mind, but some may want to stick to an evening show and dress lightly), though installation plans are in the works. Although some restoration projects are ongoing, the Palace already shines as truly glorious example of a bygone era of moviegoing. Please visit and support this...
Read moreWent to the free magic show put on by the Elks club and it was great! The popcorn was $7 for a large tub with a single refill. The staff at concessions were friendly and efficient. My only complaint would be a mentally handicapped guy walked to the end of an isle and stood swaying and moving all over the place right in everyone's view and no one made him go sit down. One young gal tried a single time and he sat down for five minutes right in the isle where he proceeded to spread his bag and items all over. Even the magician looked annoyed that this guy was getting right up at the stage. Not sure why his mom, who was with him after the show didn't have him sit with her. Not a huge deal, just annoying to have a guy bouncing all over the place distracting from the show. Also the bathrooms were a little on the sad side and without a door. Great show though and the theater is...
Read moreThe Palace Theater is one of Hilo’s crown jewels. Dating back to the early part of 20th century, it houses a lovely stage for live performances and a screen for viewing both vintage and modern films. And the lobby is large enough to hold concerts as well. The most unusual and wonderful feature is the Pipe organ. I attended the Nutcracker ballet this month and we were privileged to hear Christmas carols played on the organ by a local gentleman who is an expert on the instrument.
Throughout the year one can attend a variety of events to suit all ages with admission that’s affordable.
We are grateful to have a place like the Palace for fine arts and cultural...
