10/14/2024 Pacific Tsunami Museum 130 Kamehameha Ave Hilo, HI 96720 I went there on Columbus Day, so it was open (closed Mondays)! Street parking is available on Kalakaua Street and Kamehameha Avenue. If you are a Hilo resident or a Baby Boomer from Hilo, I highly recommend a visit. There are rooms for the history of Hilo Tsunamis and the 1960 Tsunami which I experienced. The other displays were interesting, educational and informative. The 1975 local Tsunami display was especially relevant to me because one of the fatalities was my brother's doctor. The other rooms feature displays for other Pacific Tsunamis and Tsunami science. The staff was knowledgeable, helpful and friendly I won't repeat until we have another future Tsunami for display.

Housed in an old bank building, the Tsunami Museum features compelling displays and a group of knowledgeable, friendly and very accommodating docents and volunteers. Hilo town has repeatedly been hit by Tsunami waves, especially those caused by large earthquakes elsewhere in the Pacific 'Ring of Fire'. Some of the pictures by Hilo residents of giant waves rolling-in in the background while terrified Islanders run for their lives are both amazing and shocking. What would you do when confronted by this wall of water that sweeps all before it? Be sure to stay for the video that shows some historical footage and photos as well as making it clear why Tsunami are such a danger to this one little town in the Islands. Another one of Hilo's gems. Don't miss it.

Mixed feelings on this museum. It contains tons of useful and very important information. It is critical not only for locals but also for visitors to understand the dangers that a tsunami can pose. That being said this place is in need of an update. There were no bathrooms some of the interactive exhibits could use an upgrade. I was also a bit perturbed when I asked the lady to call her dog back to her because my mom is allergic. I started by calling the dog back but she did nothing to stop the dog. Cute dog but I think it's important that they realize that not everyone can be around them. Despite this my mom still very much enjoyed the museum as did the rest of us. Ticket prices are now :$15 adults, $10 military & senior, and $5 kids.

Hilo sits in a rather precarious position, partly due to lava flow from the active Mauna Loa volcano, but also because of tsunamis caused by earthquakes further north and east in the Pacific. In the 20th century, Hilo’s tin-roofed cityscape was devastated twice by this phenomenon, in 1946 and 1960. After the last tsunami the bayfront was never redeveloped, which is why you’ll encounter mostly empty grassland today. The Pacific Tsunami Museum was founded in 1993 in memory of these events, and explains the science and the terrifying facts and figures behind tsunamis. In this former bank building, you can delve into a large library of photographs and survivor accounts and view a riveting 25-minute video.

established in 1997, the former Bank of Hawaii building, started with a unique mission “We believe that through education and awareness, no one should ever again die in Hawaii due to a tsunami.” The museum serves as a living monument to the people who lost their lives in past tsunamis back in 1946 and 1960. Featured are a series of permanent exhibits that detail the history of tsunamis in the Pacific region, myths and legends about tsunamis, public safety measures in the event of a tsunami and digital material that make the visit very interesting. Located at 130 Kamehameha Avenue in downtown Hilo. It opens 10-16h tuesday-Saturday at costs $8.
