Yamada Furniture — Hotel in Hawaii

Furniture is not something you can go online and purchase here in Hawaii. Like a good pair of shoes, there are a lot of choices that need to be considered in person: fabric, texture, color...OK, so my search for a sectional began online. I have to give Yamada Furniture respect for being a 90 year old family run business that has adapted over time resulting in an effective online and social media presence. Once on their website, I was able to ask availability of sectionals cause you know, this is Hilo and choices are few and far between. After being texted several pics of options by a sales rep, we decided to stop in and pay them a visit. Ho , big da showroom! No fancy lighting or distracting displays and no pushy sales people. The buying experience reminded me back when Hilo was dominated by local small businesses and you were treated with Aloha. Yamada is no exception and we were warmly welcomed into their business and treated with aloha. It's great to experience a business that has roots in Hilo is thriving and adapting to this internet connected world. We did shop around and weighed our options but Yamada won hands down. Went to buy some furniture during business hours, got there and there was a sign on the door saying appointment only. We were about to leave and a lady came out pushing a cart and asked is what we wanted. I told her then she said she'd let is in, but only after recording our address, phone number, temperature check, hand sanitizer, and disposable gloves were put on. After which, she unlocked the door. Got inside then she asked again, told her again, then she said they were out of stock. She disappeared, clearly not interested in talking or helping us. All of the furniture we wanted to see was covered by sheets, so with no help, we decided to leave. When leaving my 91 year old mother asked of she could us the restroom and was told no, it is for them only, no exceptions. We had been there before and had great service by a very sociable owner, but this experience kind of killed it for my mom who wanted to buy several new pieces. Don't know if we'll go back or not. I'd give it one star for that day, and four for the other time we went. I guess it just depends on who...

It was AMAZING meeting Gareth and Carol - they were patient listening to our preferences, especially since we were looking for space saving items. Gareth took this time showing me the sofas within my price budget, and I ended up buying a sofa that turns into a pull out bed for less than $1000! Carol is so sweet and warm - definitely made us feel like family and allowed us to buy a computer chair that went perfect with the desk we purchased! She took her time getting measurements of the item and was just lovely to get to know.
