Rune & Board — Attraction in Hillsboro

Rune & Board is my favorite game store in the Hillsboro area, hands down.

I've been coming here to play Magic: The Gathering for about four months, and it is just phenomenal. The owners are very approachable and friendly, and they listen to feedback. The players who frequent this place are also a fun and welcoming group of people. Even though I am pretty new at playing Magic, I have never felt unwelcome or unwanted (even though I tend to lose a lot :) ). It was a night & day difference from the uber competitive store I tried out first.

The store is always lively with people playing all sort of games--ranging from DnD and Savage Worlds to Magic: The Gathering, Final Fantasy TCG, and lesser-known games. They have a good selection of board games and the owners' recommendations are spot on. In addition, their single card selling prices are very reasonable.

Just an example of how great this place is: Today, I was looking for Gishath or Zacama for a Magic deck I'm putting together. I sent a message to them on Facebook and promptly received a reply that they only had a foil Zacama. Being the budget player I am, I decided that I was going to wait or order elsewhere so I didn't have to pay three times the non-foil price for the card. I thought this was the end of it, but about two hours later they sent me a message saying that someone had just traded in a Zacama and that they would hold it for me. I don't think I've had such excellent service from at any other store I've frequented.

This store is amazing! As someone relatively new to the Pokémon TCG I am so thankful to have this store as a hub for league play. Whether you are interested in Pokémon, Magic the Gathering, warhammer, board games, or even the newly stocked Gundam, there is a plentiful array of games and accessories to fit your needs. For each of these niches there is also an amazing staff that are happy to answer any questions and point you in the right direction. From Jojo’s Monthly Pokémon league challenges, to Aaron’s knowledge and love of model based games as well as (Nick and his wife Sadie) the owners’ clear dedication to all things local game related, I have found countless reasons to keep coming back every Saturday. They have built an amazing community that has led me to make close friends, and I will even be participating in my first ever tournament at their store. This place is fantastic and I have been coming here every Wednesday for over a year. Really clean and inclusive atmosphere for all types and ages. The owners are accessible and friendly and the staff is top notch. Special mention to Chadd and Jodee who I always see going out of their way to help customers with questions, including recommendations for new players.... or parents looking for fun and appropriate purchases for their families. I have made a lot of close friends through this game store now and its the kind of store a lot of communities would be lucky to have.
