Nice sandy beaches, wonderful surf (often out aways) and protected bathing and swimming areas for exercising (even swimming laps). Reasonably safe street lanes for bicycling. Welcome level sidewalks for jogging, and walking. It's a perfect location for picture-taking, especially those stunning sunsets. My Proposal Okay, so let's multi-task as we walk through Ala Moana Park. Together, we'll visit iconic park locations (my favorites). And, I'll share with you my picture-taking techniques. Deal? Acceptable plan? Now, here is one very simple technique. For example, at each stop, IF you step forward, back up, move to your right, or shift a little to your left, does this enhance (better frame) your image? Please consider this simple, but potentially powerful strategy. Also, close-ups give interesting detail about a subject. But, the context (the potentially fascinating setting) is left out. So, the photographer must make critical choices. Grandpa Schroer, my maternal Grandfather, helped model many of these refined techniques. And, of course, "practice makes perfect." I'll show you, which to me, are the most iconic images around the park. The landscape, of course, stays the same. But, the weather patterns, at each sunrise, throughout the day, and at subsequent sunsets are constantly shifting. And, ah those skittish rainbows, especially double rainbows are notoriously illusive, fleeting. So, it goes without saying, one needs to be at the right spot at the right time. And the activities by park visitors including people, animals, and birds of all kinds, are in flux - constantly changing. And, wildlife is especially uncooperative for not hanging around to smile for your snapshot. Therein, I believe, especially lies the unpredictable opportunities of taking great snapshots. I propose entering Ala Moana Park by her "Diamond Head" side (east entrance / exit). Please take some time to examine features of this entrance. Then, let's head "Ewa side" (due west) along the garden walkways and circle counterclockwise around the park. The park is an estimated 1 mile across from east to west. Along the way are majestic Banyan trees. Long stretches of the walkway are shaded. Then, on our backstretch, we can stroll along the beach (often with gentle tradewinds blowing in our face) with it's variety of incredible ocean, Magic Island and Diamond Head views. Okay. So, let's get started. We're off to discover new scenery and stumble across park wildlife (some birds are so friendly, they may even shake your hand) and take in the wide variety of activities of local residents and visitors. Here is my initial series of snapshots to get us started!!! Ready, set, go.

In the heart of Honolulu, nestled between the metropolitan pulse and the rhythmic surge of the Pacific, lies Ala Moana Park, a verdant oasis of tranquility that exists in harmonious counterpoint to the city's bustle. Established back in the 1930s, it has since borne silent witness to the ebbs and flows of life in this island paradise, providing respite to its inhabitants and visitors alike. Like a meticulously crafted landscape painting, Ala Moana Park offers a spectacle of nature's munificence. Towering palms sway gently in the tropical breeze, sketching patterns against the cerulean canvas of the sky. Their fronds whisper stories of the island's history, a murmuring symphony that lulls the park into serene reverie. The emerald expanse of grass is punctuated by the bright bursts of hibiscus and plumeria, their sweet fragrance melding with the salty tang of the sea air, to create a sensory bouquet that is distinctly Hawaiian. As one traverses the park, the rhythmic lapping of the waves upon the man-made beach provides a soothing soundtrack to the visual feast. The park's Magic Island, a man-made peninsula, juts out into the turquoise waters, promising enchanting views of the coastline, and come twilight, some of the most bewitching sunsets known to man. The sun dipping below the horizon, cloaking the park in hues of gold and purple, is a sight to stir the soul of even the most stoic. And so, dear reader, I commend to you Ala Moana Park. It is a place where history and beauty waltz in a timeless dance, a slice of Eden in the midst of urban sprawl. Its siren call is irresistible. Yield to it and be enveloped in its enchantment. It is, after all, not merely a park, but a symphony of the senses, a poem composed by nature and narrated by the ever-rolling waves of the Pacific.

The park itself is an awesome place to walk around and hang out. You just have to watch out for the homeless. The beach is great, plenty of space for people to spread out and plenty of shoreline for kids to play without getting in people's way. There is a reef that blocks the majority of the incoming waves and is a good place to swim or paddleboard. If you like to surf this is a great place to do it, and there are paths through the reef to get to the waves. A lot of wedding photos are taken here and on any given day during your time at this beach you will see a minimum of 5 wedding photo shoots going on. There is a lot of parking on both sides of the road as well as a parking lot down by magic island. They get full but people come and go so frequently that it is easy to find a spot unless you have a particular area you want to be at. There are plenty of showers to rinse off and a couple of public restrooms. I'd advise you bring your own toilet paper or wipes as it is scarce.

Beautiful and Lively Ala Moana Regional Park: Ala Moana Regional Park is an absolute gem in Honolulu, and my recent visit for the Aloha Festivals Parade 2024 only reinforced that feeling. The park’s scenic beauty, with its stunning views of the ocean and lush green spaces, makes it a perfect spot for various activities. Whether you’re there for a leisurely stroll, a family picnic, or an event like the Aloha Festivals Parade, the atmosphere is always vibrant and welcoming. The wide, open spaces are ideal for gatherings and festivities, and the park’s amenities, like clean restrooms and ample parking, add to the convenience. Wrapping paʻu for the parade was an unforgettable experience, and the sense of community and celebration in the air was palpable. Overall, Ala Moana Regional Park is a must-visit for both locals and tourists. It’s a place where you can relax, enjoy nature, and be part of wonderful cultural events. Highly recommended!

Well I just moved here, and it's no wonder Honolulu is one of the most sought after places to live! This beach has a 360° absolutely gorgeous view; Even looking inland from the beach was picturesque! This particular section, I was told, is called Magic Island and has a man-made cove to stop the waves making it safe for younger children to play, paddle boarding, even water polo (nets not included), etc. There are a lot of different things going on here and a variety of amenities for tourists and locals! Every Wednesday evening a church passes out food to the homeless. The tour guide bus is not too far away. There are basketball courts, beach volleyball, tennis courts that are lit up at night and bathrooms and washing stations are available. You can also get a good workout in, walk your animals, get a bite to eat at the many food trucks, and many other activities that I can't wait to partake in! I highly recommend!

Magic Island's lagoon was peaceful and not overrun by surfers and waders. We brought our snorkels, but didn't see much in the way of marine life. We were fortunate to have seen a monk seal come ashore and glad to see the gawkers give it space after the first 10 minutes of novelty. There are outdoor showers and public bathrooms, with numerous picnic areas that are numbered, so I'm guessing they can be reserved by their specific location. Some even have BBQ pits. The wildlife on the park greens are beautiful viewing, as well. The sign by the bridge says No Dogs, but there was a couple with a well behaved black lab right on the lagoon's shore. There's an open beach closer to the main road, but the lagoon is farther towards the ocean, and is worth the extra third of a mile walk (14 minutes walk) from the Ala Moana bus stop by the shopping mall where they have Jollibee!
