Read moreOur group of 4 love escape rooms and do them in just about every city we visit. We chose to try Breakout Waikiki’s Patient 57 room during our family vacation.
The experience was fun overall, but seemed poorly designed. It felt like the room creator accidentally bulk ordered four digit padlocks and had to come up with puzzles for them all. This meant that, despite there being a lot of cool and creative puzzles, they all took a similar form and were easy to mix up with another. This thing has numbers, and so does this thing, oh and this thing…. And now we have a four digit code, yay!! Try it on all 5 available locks real quick to see what that random puzzle was for in the first place.
There were also several puzzles that had pieces locked behind multiple other puzzles, but the pieces had no indication that you were still missing elements. This meant it was easy to burn time trying to solve a puzzle you weren’t ready for because it seemed you had everything.
Another issue we faced were some general maintenance issues. At a couple points my team successfully solved a puzzle but thought we must had made a mistake simple because the new unlock did not open properly or lacked any indication that something had changed.
Our guide was fairly apathetic and was very quick to give unprompted clues. I feel this is indicative that they have seen many people run headfirst into these design issues and aren’t sure what to do about them. I hope management can step in to make improvements. Some really simple things would go a long way to make this a top notch escape experience. Unique puzzle solutions (not just 4 digit codes), indicators like colored lights for when elements change, and ensuring it is obvious when elements are missing and/or do not belong together. With these changes I think everyone would have a much better...
Read moreA disappointing escape room experience was further ruined by a surly employee.
My wife and I have been introducing our kids to escape room experiences, and this was the third one we have brought them too. We chose Breakout Waikiki's easiest room accordingly: the one based on stopping a runaway train. We made it half an hour before walking out.
Simply put, the puzzles didn't work.
The puzzle concepts were easy; the room difficulty rating was fair. But poor calibration in trigger mechanisms, possibly caused by over abuse from previous customers or lack of maintenance from the company, led to everything failing or requiring luck to open.
For anyone needing tactile descriptions to believe this review, the first puzzle required pulling train horns in a sequence based on clues. The second puzzle required spinning dials to specific numbers. The dials especially were very poorly maintained and lacked calibration accuracy. They would have required more luck than skill to trigger a lock and are why we walked out.
I'm now seeing all the reviews that comment on the dingy-ness. I'm in full agreement.
We kept asking our watcher for help and got slow, and pretty useless messages when the clues and trigger mechanisms were so poor.
After growing obviously frustrated with the experience, we requested our money back. First time ever that I have done that. And this is where the manager acted like we failed and were failures on this unfortunate room. We were frustrated. He was insulting.
Save your money and go...
