I’m leaving this review because I was really unhappy with the results I received here. I went in requesting a golden blonde balayage. For context, my hair had previously been glossed auburn, which had lightened over time into a natural red shade, with about an inch of regrowth at the roots. The first appointment involved removing the gloss. I assumed this would strip most, if not all, of the color, but it didn’t — which wasn’t a major concern at that point. The following day, I returned for the actual lightening process. Unfortunately, the outcome was disappointing. My roots turned out splotchy brown, and the overall effect was very streaky. Instead of a cohesive, natural golden blonde balayage, my hair looked red with uneven bleached streaks. There was no soft transition from roots to ends, only harsh lines. The colorist did mention that the root toner would fade, but as a paying customer, I feel she should have taken responsibility before I left the salon. Even a simple, “I know this isn’t the result you wanted — let’s schedule a time to correct it,” would have gone a long way. Instead, I left with hair that I didn’t feel good about, despite paying over $850 (excluding tip) for the services. When I reached out afterward via Instagram, asking what could be done, I was quoted an additional $225 for corrections. To me, this didn’t feel right, as I was being asked to pay more to fix an issue that originated from the initial service. I included photos of what I received immediately after the appointment compared to what I had asked for. I even gave it a month to see if the look would grow on me, but it never did. For the price I paid, I expected results much closer to what I requested, and unfortunately, that just wasn’t the case.

Came in for color correction of red thar another salón messed up. The stylist assured me the color I wanted could be achieved. Paid $400 plus tip and color came out great but the next wash pretty much washed out to my natural color (medium brown). When I went in for the color correction the stylist became extremely defensive for no reason and blamed the other salon, my hair’s porosity, etc…anyone but herself. I was then told to sign this waiver thing not holding them liable for any damages so they could fix what I paid for. As I’m signing I notice the stylist is taking pictures of my hair. While I have hair modeled for them in the past as well as others, I did not sign up for that (usually involves free services or getting paid). When I told her no pictures, she pushed back and when I stood my ground she became….short…. With me. I then found that she had used my other pictures and video showing my face on her personal Instagram portfolio through a mutual friend. At no point was I asked permission nor did I give it for my photos/videos/likeness to be used for public promotion especially when I’m paying a lot. The entire experience made me feel like I was doing something wrong just for asking for what I paid for and a violation of my privacy. I’m not coming back and do not recommend this stylist. It sucks because other than this experience I think the rest of the staff as well as the Jr. Stylists still in training are great. Pictures shown are of day of and then after first wash.

Linda (color) and Julia (style) have done my hair a couple of times now and I get so many compliments I had to ask for business cards! Linda is a color goddess and specializes in transformative hair. She's super sweet, easy to talk to, and makes me want to be back in the chair like every month (if only)!! I'm always super impressed with her work and just know if you need a big change with color she is THAT GIRL 🫶🏻. Julia's cuts are always noticed too; people often ask what styling tools and products I use, but I think the secret is in the extra layers she put in. She even managed to make my baby hairs look like they were a part of the design. She gives the best scalp massages and will give you the most flattering shape you could ever imagine. Thank you to J Salon for taking care of me and my hair!

Heather did an absolutely great job. I’m pretty picky and had some hair color mishaps in the past. She will definitely be my go to in the future. The hospitality by all the staff was top notch. Can’t wait to get a haircut at Phil’s next! Thanks everyone! I’ll be coming back for sure.

The staff at J Salon always makes me feel SPECIAL! I love that about this place. Add to it the exceptional craftsmanship of the Stylists and you get an experience to remember! Thanks again, Heather, Joe, Anthony, and Natalie.

Joe is the best barber on island. Period. Thanks again for the awesome cut.

J Salon is a special place with special people. I love coming here with my sons. Anthony and Jordan did a fantastic job with there haircuts. I love coming here at the end of a busy work week and getting my cut from Joe. Always a great haircut Starts my weekend refreshed with a clean cut. Thanks guys!

I’ve been coming here every week. I love the consistency of Joe’s cut. He definitely is one of the best barbers in Hawaii. Phil’s Barbershop has a lot of awesome, quality products as well. What sets this barbershop apart from the rest is the attention to detail. The little things add up. A must experience for any man!

I always feel pampered and treated well when I come to J Salon. My boys love it too. Finally, I think I found someone that can cut my son Curren’s Hair. Great job Steph!

Thanks Stephanie. Curren loves his haircut. Your his new barber. Sharpen your tools because his hair is crazy. Need a saws all. Lol. Awesome job again.

When it comes to colored hair I make sure I leave the salon feeling satisfied. Today I had Linda she was a stylist 3 so I expected a lot. She was really sweet she talked about myself and was really caring. We discussed about the red that I wanted and proceeded on with the service. During the wash house experience water had run down my back, for some of you who know those bowls can be uncomfortable. The color started burning my scalp because I was sensitive to it but Linda was right on it to fix the solution. When we came out of the wash bowl I was concerned the roots weren’t matching the overall hair color I brought up the concern but I didn’t get much of a response. I wasn’t sure if it was the lighting but the roots looked brighter than the whole head, the assistant agreed. Now for the assistant Wayne he used a smooth iron to a 400 degree temp which I know my hair does not like I mentioned it’s frying my hair and that it needs to be anywhere from 350-380 he changed it. The way he smooth irons he sections very neat but there was zero conversation with us I was hesitant to let him know that when you smooth iron you shouldn’t clap the metals together it can get quite annoying but he looked irritated. No one helped me back to the changing room I proceeded to the front and told Linda I was not happy and that I was insecure about the color. Then Joe part owner asked if everything was okay I told him I wasn’t sure if it was the lighting because I think the roots didn’t match and etc. His response was I see a single process all over color and I think you’re just imagining it. And that when I came in the first time I had also complained about my hair. I said no and ok like he didn’t think there was a problem but I didn’t understand why it looked the way it did to him my concern was not a concern. So another stylist tried to help me understand that because we smooth ironed my hair we weren’t able to do the roots so the texture was what I was seeing different, now I appreciated that she took time out of her schedule to reassure me that it was fine I got a little mini...

Im very picky about where I get my hair done. There are a lot of facets to my decision when I’m picking a salon I’m going to stick with. After a lot of shopping around, I found J Salon and I could not be happier! Here’s my breakdown. I hope you find it helpful!

Facility: From the front desk to the waiting area, the little dressing rooms, and the stations, the whole salon feels impeccably clean and very stylish. The salon chairs are comfortable and well-designed (with easily adjustable foot rests!) and the hair washing station is one of the most thoughtfully designed stations I’ve ever seen. No sore neck, no awkward back position! And with all the cute restaurants in the area (and free parking at the Whole Foods across the street) I can’t ever help but make a day of my salon appointments.

Service: The receptionists are always super friendly, professional, and very helpful. Before COVID, they served complimentary cappuccinos with little cookies to waiting clients. I really hope they continue this once the CDC lifts the restrictions, because those cappuccinos were DELICIOUS (and I’m notorious for showing up to my appointments having forgotten to eat something first. Oops). My stylist Melvin listens carefully to what I want from my hair and really delivers. At my first appointment he instantly knew my hair type and fixed my overgrown, sun damaged mess. He also has excellent taste. His recommendations looked incredible in the end. And the scalp massage? Heaven.

Price: This is a luxury salon, so expect to pay more than a mall chain salon. I’ve been frequenting high end salons for years and I can say with great confidence that the prices here are very good for the service you get. Everything seems very curated with the clients in mind, and their stylists are very clearly talented and experienced in their craft.

J Salon is an incredible experience and, in my opinion, well worth the price. I’ll definitely be coming back for all of my cuts, coloring,...
