Absolutely unacceptable experience at Treehouse (Pasea Hotel) on 6/14.
I came in, sat down, and ordered food and a bottle of wine. To my shock, I was charged upfront before receiving anything. Iāve never had that happen in my life at a restaurant. And what made it worse? No one else around us was asked to do the same. I watched and asked other tables out of curiosityāwe were the only ones treated this way.
My party and I are Black. Everyone else? That sat around us? Not. You can draw your own conclusions, but the message felt very clear: we werenāt trusted to pay our bill like everyone else.
Later that night, I noticed a suspicious $127.15 charge on my card that I never signed for. It didnāt even show up the same as the others (āPasea Treehouseā instead of āPasea-Treehouseā). After reviewing the bill, it seems they charged us upfront to āmake sure we could payā, then charged us again for the full amount at the end. Iām assuming the $127 was some kind of hold, but it was never explained, disclosed, or authorized.
Between that and the $275 bill I paid (with over 20% tip), two additional drinks at the bar, and valet parking, this was not a small night out. But the way we were treated made it feel like we didnāt belong there.
I tried to resolve this directly and respectfully. I called Treehouse multiple times and was told the manager ācomes in at 4ā but is āin a meetingā every time. After being brushed off for days, itās clear they have no interest in acknowledging or correcting the situation.
Treehouse and the Pasea Hotel should be ashamed. Singling people out based on how they look, treating them with suspicion, and giving others a normal dining experience is discriminationāplain and simple.
To my fellow Black patrons and people of color: be aware of how you may be treated here. We were forced to prove we could pay, while everyone else just ran a tab.
I had hoped this was a misunderstanding. It wasnāt. So now Iām sharing it publicly so others are warned. I will...

And the seemed to have good security. It's very hard to even find access from the beach or sidewalk Access only thru front entrance off of PCH where they have 15 valets and where they park ur ride for 11 bucks mandatory.
We used metered parking for 2.50 or 4.50 per hour.
The good parts of Tanner's tanning oven was mostly spoiled by the loud LOUD rock concert speakers and the lack of available shade since the sun was high and it was 90 in the sun. It was impossible to communicate without screaming and yelling at top of our lung capacity, so it's a good place for a date if you want to mask your lack of intelligence from your teeny bopper companion. Childish management running this place. They have about 30 big umbrellas for shade but 20 of them were furled. So we baked in the sun.
We ordered the 18 dollar filet or rib eye with fries because we liked the crispy look of the fries on the table near us and told our cool waitress that.
The steak part was really good even tho cut into baby bite size pieces and covered with a tasty zesty avo halipeno sauce,, but the mountain of once crispy under the steak turned to a hot gooey mushy ball of spicy avo starch. So, get the steak and fries but tell them to put the sauce in a bowl and dip in it. This would be worth the $18, but it was disappointing to us.
The cocktails were WAY TOO expensive but acceptable...but then my head is still in the 60's and 70's. We paid over $70 for one order of $18 steak, two scotch and sodas (they have no fresh OJ only canned), and one lemonade plus tip. Parking and aloe for the sunburn were extra...but at least we didn't have to tip the 11 dollar valet and the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWorst dining experience Iāve had in years, I wish I was kidding. Do not come here expecting to get decent food, its appetizers only. We walked in and sat at the bar. After 10 minutes we realized the bartender was too busy and it was understaffed. He said hello but did not take our order. We moved over to an open table thinking we might get a server to come to us. 10 minutes later, nothing. I went and asked the host if we were supposed to order at the bar and he said no, wait for a sever to come. Okay, a sever finally comes. Itās now 2:45pm. We asked to order lunch, but she said itās only brunch items (I.e French toast, very limited menu) until 3pm. She said we should wait 15 minutes and remind her at 3. Okay, we did that, then we asked to move to a different table because they were blasting the Jonas Brothers over our heads at nightclub level of volume. By the time we get food, itās now 3:15pm and nobody has offered me a drink yet. The server was too busy and kept walking away every time I was about to try (not her fault, it was clearly understaffed). She was very short with us but probably had no choice, she had about 20 tables. Food arrived, as pictured. The poke bowl is literally just what I would describe as fish slop (no rice) served with, not exaggerating, 3 chips. I was able to eat about 1/3 of it with my 3 chips and it was not very good. Finally after almost an hour, I managed to order a cocktail and the drink that arrived was not what I ordered. I was so mad at that point that I asked her to close us out and we left and ate somewhere else. $90 total with tip for that experience (two appetizers, one of which was french fries, a hard seltzer and a cocktail). Insane. I wish I could do a...
