I paid for a ticket at the educational center from a very polite and helpful young man. The metal pin he gave me would notify the memorial museum that I had bought a ticket. I enjoyed the video presentation, though would like to see it updated with more details of Houston's life and service. I enjoyed the temporary exhibits on the types of hats Sam Houston would have worn, and the funeral customs of the period. I then walked the grounds and bought pottery from the artist next to the souvenir trading post. I was invited into the workshop and she shared how purchasing pottery would fund additional supplies to create more art. I bought three items. The gift shop/trading post has a great and interesting selection of gifts, including books, clothing, videos, toys and artwork. I then walked to the memorial museum. Upon opening the door, I was immediately greeted with "what do you need help with" by the lone female staff. "I'm here to see the museum." (Why else would I be there?) She pointed to the exhibit and I was instructed to start at the left entrance of the museum. She abruptly turned away to sit behind the desk. More public relations training is suggested for this female staff, but it may interrupt her embroidery project. Very well designed exhibit, real artifacts from Sam Houston's life and beautiful interpretive signs. I would have also enjoyed music or sounds of the times, as well as an option for auditory interpretation in various parts of the exhibit. I enjoyed the grounds and pride shown by the care of the cabins, furniture, artifacts, exhibits and demonstrations. Signed: Retired public school teacher and certified...

Read moreWow! Plan on all day and bring a lunch 🥳$4 per person with our homeschool group so they had presenters at the various locations who were exceptional and obviously enjoyed their craft. The fabulous woman teaching about cotton also created the display in the gift shop called “from seed to sock” the entire display was created by her including growing heirloom cotton! A wonderful young man named Josh was manning the blacksmith smithy and did an awesome presentation And answers all my kids questions but more so my husbands 😂😂😂 the young man at the smaller white home was extremely knowledgeable and had excellent interaction with the kids. There was also a great gun guy who shot off a few black powder charges which our smaller boys loved. Then we finished up by tasting cornbread from the separate kitchen building from a sweet lady who was so engaging and giving the kids plenty of time to answer the questions she was asking while making authentic cornbread from scratch (except the buttermilk 😂😂) she also explained all the hilarious things about doing laundry like chamber lye! Look that up 🤮 we had to break for lunch at Mr Hamburger and then we went to the actual museum. Did you know that Sam Houston met the Marquis de Lafayette, Francis Scott Key and Alexis de Tocqueville? The grounds open from dawn to dusk and we highly recommend planning an entire day with a...
