German Submarine U-505 — Attraction in Hyde Park Township

The crown jewel of the museums collection. As you walk into the main hall, it feels like you are walking into an old WWII sub pen. The displays are well done and give you the history of how they hunted U-505, her capture, and how they brought it to the museum.

There was a lot of care to make this one of the better WWII displays we have seen in our travels. The only complaint is to experience the inside of the submarine. You have to buy an additional ticket per person on top of museum tickets and parking. Even without going into the sub, you still can have a great experience.

Ich war am 07.April 2025 zu Besuch in Chicago und hatte von dem deutschen U-Boot im Museum gehört. Das Griffin Museum of Science+Industry bietet eigene Parkplätze an, welche aber ziemlich teuer sind. Tagespauschale um die $20. Ich empfehle in den Nebenstraßen nach einem Parkplatz zu suchen, welche deutlich günstiger sind. Was mich gestört hat, das es keine Tickets nur für den Besuch ds U-Boots gab. Ich musste also ein Tagesticket für das gesamte Museum UND eines für das U-Boot kaufen, was mich knapp $44 gekostet hat. Auf dem Weg zum U-Boot musste ich durch einige andere Ausstellungen. Der Weg war ausgeschildert und Barrierefrei. Dennoch war es manchmal etwas verwirrend, weil es nicht ganz klar war, ob ich tatsächlich richtig bin.

Das U-Boot an sich ist in einer eigenen Halle untergebracht und liebevoll ausgestellt. Jetzt erklärt sich auch das extra Ticket. Man kann mit dem normalen Museum-Ticket das U-Boot nur von außen betrachten, aber nicht hinein gehen und auch nicht die anderen Devotionalien betrachten.

Die Führung, welche man mit dem Ticket dazugekauft hat ist ganz okay. Für U-Boot-Neulinge sehr informativ, aber nicht für Leute, die sich mit der Materie näher beschäftigt haben.

Interessant sind die Interviews der amerikanischen und deutschen Crew, welche man nach Kriegsende geführt hat.

Fazit: Wenn man in Chicago ist und an WW2 interessiert ist, ist der Besuch ein muss, auch wenn das Ticket etwas teuer ist. Das Boot wird gut gepflegt und der Mythos erhalten.
