The next morning, in desperate need of a shower and a change of clothes (that we didn’t have), we dragged ourselves to Macy’s at Castleton Square Mall just to grab a few things. I felt horrible—exhausted, disheveled, and honestly embarrassed to be seen in public, especially in a place like Macy’s.
But then we met Maria.
Maria changed everything. She is the absolute star of this story. Although we shopped in multiple departments, Maria was the only one who looked us in the eye, spoke to us with genuine kindness, and treated us like VIPs. Her patience, her warmth—it stopped me in my tracks. Even days later, I’m still thinking about it.

The cashier said everything she'd entered was gone when it came back up so she re-entered everything and gave me a discount for having to wait so long. I immediately paid the credit card balance (which was a different amount than what I was later billed for due to the discount) with my debit card at the register as I always do, so I was surprised to get a Macy's bill for the original amount. I disputed the amount, explaining what happened to 2 different people in 2 different countries in 2 different calls because I received a letter after the 1st call telling me they needed more information. Yesterday, I received a letter telling me the investigation was closed, I owe the double bill, and if I don't pay the minimum due, they will report it to the credit bureau. I trusted the cashier when she said the charges didn't go through the 1st time and I'm sure she believed she was correct. Macy's actually sent me both receipts showing the exact same item numbers on both. Apparently, they didn't notice. They could have checked to see that there was a computer crash between the 1st and 2nd receipts, they could have also asked the cashier what happened, but they did none of this or their "investigation" would have had a different result. There was nothing I could have done at the time except ask the cashier to return everything she rang up before the crash, but again, I trusted that the charges didn't go through.
