My date and I went to Ragnarok to celebrate my birthday on Friday. It was our first time axe throwing, and we were very excited. I immediately felt comfortable because of the cleanliness of the facility and welcoming atmosphere.
For the majority of our time there, we were only one of two couples. We both appreciate peaceful atmospheres, but we did feel it was a little too quiet. Even with the earlier timing of our visit, some music, however softly played, would have enlivened the space. Still, we enjoyed our time and felt welcomed by the owner. The assistant, Saffron (AKA Sapling) was also very engaging, helpful, and funny.
The primary reason for the lost star is due to the issues my date had booking our 2-person session. We’re young, intelligent people, but he shared that the website was a bit confusing when it came to booking the most appropriate session type for 2 people. He said that the site prompted him to pay for “The Game Show.” Given our lack of familiarity with Ragnarok and axe throwing in general, we had no idea what to expect from the selected experience.
As it turns out, my date mistakenly chose an experience that was meant for a large group of people, not a couple. The owner explained that to us once we arrived. Realizing there were only two people throwing, it was decided we wouldn’t need/get “The Game Show” experience, though Saffron did take a minute to quickly demonstrate two games we could play together if we were interested.
There was an opportunity for my date, who paid for everything, to receive a refund for the difference since we only needed the “Date Night” experience and not the “The Game Show” experience. The pricing difference between the two is significant. Had I known what he paid beforehand, I would have definitely discussed it with the owner and made sure we received and paid for the right experience.
We did get the extra half-hour and coupon card associated with “The Game Show” experience, so I think that made it fair. I mostly feel bad that my date paid so much just for my birthday. To be clear, we weren’t deceived in any way. Only, there was an opportunity to provide us with a more cost-effective experience once the understanding was reached.
Other than this issue, we did enjoy our time at Ragnarok and all our interactions with the owner and employees. The wine we had was solid, but their snack offerings definitely need an upgrade. We will most likely return and definitely be more diligent...
Read moreBought a Groupon, however once I processed the Groupon on the website I still had to pay a $5 fee per valcher. I still saved money with the Groupon anywhere from 10 to $15. It was supposed to be a date night. Ended up with a family and their three kids. Really glad it wasn't just me and him. It would not have been fun. The axepert make it very enjoyable. We had Sapling. He was very engageable. However he did not talk very loud, and with pork chop being next to him he drownded him out on many occasions. It was very hot in the building. Sapling had to keep wetting our targets for our axes stick. The website says you can bring kids as young as seven. However being there and seeing what it requires I don't think it's a good idea. The youngest kid in our group was 12. And she only put the ax in the board three times. I would not want to bring my child and discourage them, or waste money. Plus the "script" can be taken very derogatorily. I would rate it for 15 and up but that's me. I wish I could rate different aspects of the experience. I would go again. My date would...
Read moreI received an hour and a half session as a surprise birthday gift. I had no idea what to expect, as I wasn't told until I was in the parking lot what we were doing, but after being there, I found out they have two options: hour session of just throwing (with a safety inspector) an hour and a half session with a personal guide who arranged games/challenges, etc.
Having done it, I would WHOLLY RECOMMEND doing the hour and a half. First of all, the guides are funny and react well to the crowd. They all have nicknames (mine was Smart Axe - she did a great job!) and really get you into it. You may think that 90 minutes of throwing axes would get boring. Absolutely not! They have fun challenges, add new twists, etc. all throughout. Also Tom O'Hawk will keep you supplied with snacks and drinks as you need. They apparently also have a catering for larger groups, but we were just a smaller group. Either way, still lots of fun, and highly...
