I'm sitting here in a lot of pain that was caused by excessive, unnecessary walking at the Texas Frightmare Weekend that I attended last night; pain that could've easily been avoided had your venue been set up with disabled people in mind.
Parking sucks. The Will Call line was stretched through the attached parking garage across all of the limited and precious handicapped spots on the first level. Will Call's line should've been wrapped around the building all along the sidewalk and not blocking the much needed handicapped parking. I ended up parking in the structure next door on the fifth floor because AGAIN the handicapped spots were taken by VIP pass holders. An able-bodied person should NOT be parking in the handicapped spots just because they paid more money.
Crossing the street from the secondary parking garage to the area where the Will Call line started was abyssmal. There are no curb ramps or protected crosswalks that allow handicapped people in wheelchairs, or in my case a walker, to safely exit and cross the street. I had to walk all the way down towards the front of the building, cross at the crosswalk, and then walk all the way back down to the main parking structure to get to the Will Call line.
Once I got my entrance bracelet from Will Call, which was inside the building at a table in the main hallway, I was forced to walk back out the way I came in so I could walk around the building to the front entrance...instead of walking 30 feet around the Will Call table and into the Exhibit Hall. Security stopped anyone trying to enter (with a valid bracelet) and directing us (me and several other people in wheelchairs and walkers) to march ourselves back out and around. For what? Once inside, we were allowed to go whereever we wanted. Why was that 30 feet of space so precious security guards wouldn't let handicapped people through?
So having to do all that unnecessary walking put a severe strain on me and my Saturday, and probably Sunday, are going to be wasted. I won't be able to do much of anything until the swelling and pain subside...all because handicapped accessibility wasn't really available because $$$$$ was more important. I read the accessibility statement on the venue's website; it's a load of BS. They put the bare minimum into what little accessibility they have, and then screwed that little up by using it for other purposes. Shame on you Irving Convention Center. Shame.
Sad thing was, I wasn't the only person who noticed this. Another woman complained to the Box Office worker who could not have cared less even if he was paid to.
Yes, I know I was there for a convention and there would be a lot of walking. I took that into consideration when making plans. I was there to see two celebrities only Friday night. Had I been able to park in the main garage at the handicapped parking and not forced to walk around the building several times just to enter, I would've been okay.
Do better Irving Convention Center. I, for one, will not be attending any other events there any time in the near future. I took the hint. I'm not...
Read moreAbsolutely horrible. Our community is welcomed with open arms across the country almost every weekend for dog shows in various venue's all the like to this one. Never ever have we been treated with such disrespect. As a community we travel from all over the country to gather at these venues for shows I personally traveled over 8 hours to come to the Irving Convention Center just to be thrown out bc of a cleaning crew issue. The same type of cleaning crew is at every show hosted by different people in different states it's done by family members and friends who volunteer their time. The Irving Convention Center is a selfish greedy and money hungry venue that wanted nothing more than as much money in their pocket as they could get. So they found a loop hole to not only keep all of our money, but kick us out only a few hours after they opened their doors. If the policy was so major and air tight in your contract then why wasnt this addressed before your doors were opened? Why did you wait until we were packed inside and booths set up to say that something was wrong? The only thing wrong is the way you conduct business, the way you treat your clients, and the way you disrespected our community. You have a complete disregard for our valuable time and money. You should be completely ashamed of yourselves. Though you may look at us and see just a bunch of dogs, a look past the exterior you will find a VERY LARGE WORLD WIDE community who will not sit idly and allow this disrespect to go unnoticed. SHAME ON YOU!!! Your complete discrimination against our breed as well as our person was the most disgusting and disturbing display of modern day human indecency I have ever seen. You may block us from making reviews on your Facebook page but trust very well we will take to every other...
Read moreMy lifelong friend and I, Little Brother as far as I'm concerned, was going to see a wrestling promotion. We like to watch the show and get a good laugh at some of the people who take the show way too seriously and get worked up into a pandelerium. The virtual contests were great performers and played with the audience to the point where the spectators were out of their seats a majority of the time. The matches continued for much longer than I expected. The promoters were filming the show for a future TV program. I was rather impressed with the quality of the show. It's a good startup company, the last time we saw a show it was in a much smaller Convention Center in Carthage TX. The Irving Convention Center was about 4 times the size of the one in Carthage. Maybe bigger. I had to pay too much for soda, snacks, and the beer was $6 a bottle. Oh well they got you in a bind, no outside drinks or food was posted on signage and the police were present just in case you or someone else wanted to act stupid. I did like the fact that we were able to go in without a mask, but people were wearing them for their good. We had to pay $10 to park and the men taking the money were not there when we left. We did park in an enclosed lot. Semi safe I guess. The auditorium was comfortable, the AC was set at a comfortable temperature. Can't complain. The only thing I didn't like was the size of the chairs and the fact that the setup staff interlocked the same small chairs. It would have been much more comfortable if you didn't have to rub elbows with the person...
