I discovered this place while walking on Devon Avenue. A very unpretentious Hindu place where the statue of Lord Ganesha is prominently enshrined. There is a sense of peace that one's feel when in a sacred place. You have to take off your footwear as you enter as a show of respect. There was a young looking man who I later learned as the pandit (priest). He is very friendly and seems to be shy. He offered if I want to receive a blessing. He said some prayers and tied a piece of string on my left wrist with a blessing. I am not a Hindu but I felt that the divine is in here. As far as I understand, God is in many forms that come to us so we can understand Him better depending on where we came from. This time in the form of a Hindu deity. I don't know much about religion but I know that we cannot limit God. He comes in mysterious ways. I left the temple feeling well and promised myself that I will come back and maybe bring some incense as a gift to God for introducing Himself to me...
Read moreI have been coming here for years because it is on Devon Avenue and is the only Hindu temple there. It is a simple temple that is recently renovated. The main shrine is obviously to Ganesh but they will be installing a Parvati-Shiva shrine, a Sita-Rama shrine and a Balaji shrine. I am excited to see these. Also, the priests are always friendly (but not overly intrusive). It is great. The prasadam is only fruit and snacks; I do not think they ever serve a fuller meal. I hope they add this. As you probably know if you are reading this: people like to have some lunch when they go on a Saturday or Sunday. I am not sure where the community is from but since all the temples in the area are either Western/Bengali (ISKCON), South Indian (HTGC & Venkatesvara/Balaji) or Gujarati (BAPS), it would be interesting to know what they would serve here. Anyway, a nice place for a...
Read moreThe Shree Ganesh Temple, on Devon Street, in Chicago is a beautiful, peaceful little place to pray or worship. There are intricate carvings and vibrant colors, which add to the temple's lovely look. And it's staffed with polite, accommodating, generous staff. The gentlemen were so sweet to this newbie (& my Grandson). Whether you're seeking spiritual solace or simply admiring the architecture, this temple offers a soothing escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. And it's definitely worth a visit, whether you're a devout follower or just curious about different cultures and traditions (me and my Cultural Anthropology student & Yoga instructor curiosity about Indian culture & Hindu...
