It's more like 3.5 stars but I'll round up. I like going to Asian Food Market because it's one of the closer Asian supermarkets in my area, if I don't feel like going to 99 Ranch. Here is some of the good and the bad.
Pros: Prices are slightly cheaper than 99 Ranch There's a huge selection of Thai, Vietnamese, and Filipino products. More than any other Asian supermarket chain I've been to. So whenever I'm looking for an obscure ingredient, I know I can find it here There is a good selection of seafood but I usually only ever buy shrimp from here There's a cooked food section with plate lunches and Chinese BBQ. I still haven't tried it yet but will need to one day because there are only so many places nearby I can get my cha siu fix
Cons: Produce can be hit or miss. There are certain items that look super fresh but others look like they've really been picked through and have been there for days There's a bit of a funky smell in the meat section but I feel like most Asian supermarkets have that. I've only ever gotten beef bones/beef stew meat/pork bones, which were all packaged in the refrigerator section (though I'm sure they come from the back) so I can't speak to the butcher section
There's another Asian Food Market in Piscataway, which is bigger and cleaner but if you don't feel like making the trek there, this one is a...
Read moreLots of selections and competing brands of everything Asian-- in cans, bottles, boxes, bags. They also have cooking utensils, small kitchen appliances. Many selections of fresh breads, sea foods, vegetables, and even cooked food. The number of choices for rice in 20 to 25 lb sacks is dizzying. The check out registers are fast. But... fruits are not very fresh. And the "fresh" fish displayed on ice in the sea food stall are not exactly fresh. I saw an employee pull out a 3 lb packaged box of frozen shrimp from the freezer, take the shrimps out of the box, pour some warm water to thaw it, then spread it out in the "fresh" sea food stall. I wonder what happens to the remaining thawed shrimp at the end of the day. Cheaper to pick up the box from freezer and not worry...
Read moreI usually go there for buying fish has a wide variety of fish and of fresh quality. I want to give 1 star because of the recent visit. In the fish counter there was an old man. No sign of price so I had to enquire about it. He was totally irritated to answer the questions not even to me there were many people around me, with everyone asking questions he is very rude. And I asked him to clean the fish and said the number for cut. He returned without cutting it , I asked him and man was waiting next to me to buy even he heard me telling about the cleaning. He was yelling at me can't you open your mouth and tell me. Your customers are not a joke to you and am not there for time pass. His rude behaviour is the only reason I had to give...
