Went to see the youth production of Pippi Longstocking. Our first time at the theater. It was the weekend, but we had no trouble locating parking. The production we saw was the sensory friendly one. We didn't need that version, but it was the only one left with tickets. We didn't know really what to expect with the sensory friendly version, but it was fine. One section had an ASL translator. They also had boxes that lit up anytime a loud sound was coming up. The boxes lit up a little too bright for my liking, but not horrible. They keep the house lights up a little bit for this version. I didn't mind at all. Bathrooms were easy to locate and clean. The chairs could be a little more comfortable. My husband had minor surgery and they were not very comfortable for him. Also depending on where you sit, most spot didn't have very much leg room. Keep in mind I'm only 5'1", so it's not like I require a lot of leg room. The sensory friendly program does not lock the doors, so you are able to leave at anytime during the show if it becomes too much or if your little needs to use the restroom. I'd be willing to go again if there was another production I was...
Read moreThe Kalamazoo Civic Theatre is truly a gem in the community! I had the absolute joy of performing in their production of Oklahoma!—an experience that was as professional as it was welcoming. From the moment I walked in, I felt supported not just as a performer but as part of a vibrant artistic family.
The staff and directors are passionate, the volunteers are incredible, and the level of talent and care that goes into every production is inspiring. Audiences are enthusiastic, the facilities are top-notch, and the rehearsal process is both challenging and uplifting.
I’m so grateful for the memories I’ve already made here, and I’m beyond excited to be auditioning for Annie next! The Kalamazoo Civic Theatre doesn’t just put on shows—it builds community, nurtures talent, and brings joy to performers and...
Read moreWatched "Clybourne Park" at 'The Civic' on a Sunday afternoon and was impressed with the acting, direction, and facilities. (The play won a Pulitzer Prize for drama, and a Tony when it ran on Broadway in 2010 and 2011 respectively and deals with serious themes using sometimes rough language.) The Civic is a landmark of Kalamazoo culture with a long history in the community, and while the decor may be a bit dated, the facility has been very well maintained. It's a relatively small venue where nearly all the seats are good, but some people will find the first three rows to be a bit too close. Very much...
