Our kids had a great time in the Merlin's Ghost Room. The staff were very kind and welcoming and it was a fun place for our son's birthday! They do not have party rooms and did not respond at all to our messages asking about that. One note: I recommend not prepaying for a large group unless you are okay paying for people who get sick and can't attend. You can only reschedule the entire group on a reservation or no one at all.
The Merlin's Ghost room was really fun. Not scary at all, but mysterious - and being in the old historic building gave it a very special atmosphere.
The room had some really fun elements and hidden extras that made it exciting.
I would definitely recommend this room as one teens/tweens could solve on their own or a great first escape room for families with kids. It isn't too hard, but is still lots of fun.
Kids can actually help find and solve many of the clues in the Merlin Room. We had a group of four young teens and a few adults. We thought it would be harder and were out within around 30 minutes. It was a lot of fun, but we would not have rushed so much on this one had we known it was so much easier. There were still challenging parts, just no need to rush.
The other rooms sound much harder - we've known some large groups of adults who didn't escape them, so we will be back in the future to try the Tool Room or the Manhattan Project.
The Merlin's Ghost room was not scary. There were a few areas with black lights, but nothing scary at all - just fun. Would definitely recommend it for kids.
The staff was also very kind after the room was solved. They gave us time to let our kids talk about their experience and hang out for a few minutes to wish my son a happy birthday.
One thing we were disappointed in was that part of our party got sick and could not attend. We knew there were no refunds, just reschedules, but it wasn't clear on the website that after prepaying, you would have to reschedule the entire group if part of the group couldn't come.
So, when you are prepaying for reservations, keep that in mind. You cannot reschedule some of who you prepaid for. You have to reschedule everyone or no one.
I recommend not prepaying for a large group unless you are okay paying for people who get sick and can't attend.
You can add people to your reservation later, but you can't reschedule just one person or even half of your prepaid group.
Our choices were to either cancel for everyone and reschedule the whole party (and it was my son's birthday, so that would be pretty disappointing), to find someone last minute to fill the empty spot, or just lose the $30 we prepaid.
We called the business office and asked for a credit for the sick person or to reschedule the one person who was sick to another day, but they would not do that.
So, we ended up paying for a spot we didn't use, which at $30 per person for 30 minutes was very disappointing. This was already a stretch for our budget. We invited a parent with our group to step in to use the spot, and the experience was fun, but I wouldn't prepay for more than 2-3 people in the future.
So, my advice: get a reservation for just a few people (since you have to prepay to reserve a specific room and time slot), and then add on to your reservation on the day of to be sure you don't pay for anyone who can't come. Unless your budget is looser than ours and you don't mind paying $30 extra for something you can't use.
The other thing that could improve was that there needs to be reflective tape on the low spots where you bend down to get through - two people hit their heads thinking they had cleared it in the dark.
Other than that, we definitely...
Read moreWe were a few minutes late to our scheduled time due to traffic, so I understand urgency, but our experience being greeted was horrible. Upon entrance, we had asked to use the restroom and the employee denied us access to the closest restroom. She told us we would have to walk all the way upstairs to use the restroom closest to the room we were using since we were late. She was rude and pushy the entire time we were there. The introduction and explanation of our escape room was so fast, not a single one of us could comprehend what she was saying. The way this employee was speaking so fast and unclear made it obvious to everyone in our group that she was irritated with us and no one felt comfortable to ask any questions about our game. It was obvious she cared more about getting us in and out of the building more than us having a fun experience. The experience during the actual puzzle was worse than the greeting. We specifically chose the most difficult puzzle because we wanted a challenge, but didn't realize we would be walked through the whole thing. Every few minutes, it felt like we were being scolded over the intercom. I understand if we're touching something we shouldn't be touching, but a lot of the times we were scolded because we were doing something that wasn't essential to solving the puzzle. For example, a member of our party had gotten on the floor to look underneath the furniture to see if something might have been written underneath. This person wasn't breaking, hurting, or even touching anything but we were still warned "not to do that". It felt like we were being babysat the entire time and if we did anything that didn't strictly help solve the puzzle, we were scolded for it. "You don't need to do that, ignore this, ignore that. There's nothing in there, you don't have to look in that area." The point of an escape room is to be left alone so you can solve a puzzle as a team. Again, I understand being scolded if we're doing something destructive or harming the set... I can recall one instance where someone touched something they weren't supposed to. But in this case, it was mostly harmless investigation. The whole experience was awful. When it was over, they rushed us out the door and sent us on our way. It was so unwelcoming. I left feeling so upset and did not get the experience I paid almost $250 for. We definitely will not ever be returning here, there are a lot of other escape rooms in KC with employees that know how to make the experience fun without belittling guests or being controlling of the entire game....
Read moreThis was my 2nd trip to your escape rooms. I came the 2nd time to introduce a new group of friends. Unfortunately, this experience was not as enjoyable as my first. When we first got there & rang the bell, we were told to come back 20 minutes later (after we were expressly told to be 15 minutes early) through the intercom system. (it was raining) We went next door to Chef J's. They were courteous enough to extend their hospitality and get us out of the rain. After eating, one of the employees let us go through the interior door into The Beast lobby area. When I called Emily to let her know that we had returned & that we were on the inside of the building, she immediately started to berate me for being inside the building without being let in by her. While I understood her confusion about how we may have gotten into the building, she was completely out of line. Once I apologized, she continued her tirade. By the time I cut her off, one of my friends was ready to leave. I calmed her down. Then, Emily showed up, on the upper landing, and began to berate us ALL. I fired back as politely as possible - to no avail. Ms. Emily continued until I cut her off. Then, she told us to 'come on up' there. We started following her as she rattled off the house rules or whatever information she was required to give us at that time. We couldn't hear or understand her; but we didn't think she meant for us to hear her. When we made it up to the 4th floor, we signed our waivers & she took the payment. We waited a bit & Bruno showed up.
If Emily had just read her audience, she would have been able to tell that we were a group of women old enough to be her mothers. (almost grandmothers:)) Her chastisement couldn't have fallen on more def ears. And could not have been less appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I only went into such detail because I really enjoyed my time the first time. I would hate for anyone else to experience that type of hospitality no matter what the ranking of the employee. That one manager can ruin a perfectly...
