Having done many escape rooms across Houston and in other cities and states, I decided to give Exit 4 a try since it was a newly opened location. With new venues, there’s always the risk that they may not live up to the expectations set by other highly regarded escape rooms (even when reviews are close to 5/5).
My friends and I chose The Wandmaker’s Curse, so I can only speak to this room when I say the experience was overall underwhelming. While linear puzzles are not inherently bad, they become much less enjoyable in a group because they force everyone to crowd around a single space to solve them. Combined with the limited space, a group of more than five can start to feel cramped. Additionally, many of the puzzles lacked engagement, and even when certain parts of the room tried to “wow” you with technology, the effect fell short compared to the excitement provided by other escape rooms at a slightly higher price point. Well-designed puzzles usually leave you with an “aha” moment when you solve them—or make you feel rightfully silly for missing something obvious after asking for a clue. Unfortunately, this was not the case with The Wandmaker’s Curse. Some puzzles were made difficult without good reason. To use an analogy, it felt like trying to improve a finished dish by adding seasoning after the fact—no matter how much you add, the base still isn’t right. One puzzle in particular, a simple memorization game, felt like wasted potential. By the time you reach the end of the escape room, you’re left with the underwhelming thought: “Oh, that’s it?”
While the price point is slightly lower than some competitors, the experience doesn’t justify even that reduced cost. If this is your first escape room, I recommend starting with The Escape Game. If you’ve already done those, Escape Again in Sugar Land is also a...
Read moreStaff is super friendly and I loved the story of how the place came to be. We have done a bunch of escape rooms at many different escape room places all over Texas and even a few others while on vacation in other states.
We did the Jersey Devil themed room today and enjoyed the experience overall. They rate it 3/4 difficulty. Personally I would rate it 4/10 in difficulty. Found the puzzles overall to be relatively simple. The room itself was very linear, you have to do them in a certain order, with a larger group some people won't have much to do. The 1st puzzle took us some time as we wouldn't have guessed to start there. And a different puzzle we didn't know to press and hold. Friends have done the Wandmaker's Curse room and said many of the puzzles were similar just a different theme.
Loved the fact that it is private rooms no matter the group size and thought the 60 minutes was the right amount of time to add pressure but not worry if you had some troubles with any puzzle.
Overall, I had a good time because I enjoy the activity but found the difficulty to be too easy and too linear for our group. Will probably come back to try the other rooms and maybe bring friends who are less...
Read moreMy husband and I love solving puzzles, and we're always up for tackling a good mental challenge. We have been wanting to try an Escape Room, but they always seem to require a group to participate. I saw that Exit-4 allows private groups of 2 people, so we booked a session. I'm so glad we did-- we had a blast! We completed the "Room 172" challenge which has a setting reminiscent of the movie "The Shining".
It was our first escape room, so I can't compare it to other places or remark on how difficult the room was compared to other rooms. But, we had a fun time, and the set-up worked very well for two players. We look forward to trying out another room in the...
