Blunt but honest review* intended for new/ inquiring shoppers or gift shoppers for gamers**
Once a great GAME store - CM Games, in recent years, has become a simple over priced knick knacks/ plushie store. The do offer video games and consoles/ board games/ card games but all at the HIGHEST marked retail price. (Even on used equipment and games)
If thinking about going here instead consider- 'McKays' for purchasing used games and equipment at an extremely reasonable price
'Level Up' game store- for supplies of magic the gathering (they pull from stock all day every day, on walk in. (Like CM use to)). Also recommended for board games and role playing game supplies. Prices are somewhat lower depending on item.
For nerdy plushy I would save a trip and use 'Wish' or 'Amazon' instead. Delivery fees included will still get it to your door at a more reasonable price.
CM Games used to be an amazing GAME SHOP, now presents itself as more of a bad toy store with no more interest in it's frequenting card players. They don't tend to give reasonable 'used' price discounts on used items.
The unwillingness to pull any magic the gathering cards* unless ordered online the day before* is what finally lost my business. what pulls I ever did need were needed when visiting to play tournaments. And what was found to be needed was usually in those last seconds before the start of tourneys. This service is now impossible to get there and so I feel unable to play there knowing I can't come straight in after work and make adjustments to my deck before playing in paid games.
I again suggest "Level up" for having the availability to meet these needs seemingly willingly and pain free. Pulls from back stock any time the need arises. Good game nights, prize support.
POSITIVE NOTE- Staff is ALWAYS full of friendly salesmen offering to help you find what you're looking for. They all have very pleasant attitudes, and seem to enjoy their occupation.
2 stars for staff friendliness and willingness to help. 1 star for cleanliness. -1 for Outrageous prices on used and new items -1 for lack of patience/ care/ time and effort put into needs and care of card...
Read moreSTAY FAR AWAY! Walked in this location to buy pokemon product for my sealed collection. As I am browsing the shelf, a sign is slapped up right in front of my face saying "all pokemon prices are not accurate and won't be honored". The quickest way possible to lose a customer who has spent multiple thousands of dollars in your stores. Absolutely repulsive business ethics. If your pricing is changing, you do it when the store is closed, not when a customer is ready to buy something and you decide the posted price is no longer accurate. Will never step foot into any of CM Games locations again. Only shop here if you want to pay 50% above current market price for anything you buy. Disgusting.
(EDIT) In response to owner’s comment, this occurred at both the Cedar Bluff location and West Town Mall location back to back at around 4PM yesterday 8/18)
(EDIT #2) I can 100% clarify that absolutely no signs were posted during my visit to West Town UNTIL AFTER I WAS ACTIVELY LOOKING AT BOXES. And to your point of “fair pricing” when the item was $274.99 and I get quoted $449.99 at the register, when the SAME EXACT ITEM is on TCGplayer/Ebay for sale at $330-340… Doesn’t seem too fair to me. Any other excuses you’d like to defend with?
(Final Edit) Again you’re completely incorrect. I certainly spoke to an individual at your Cedar Bluff location (for lack of a better description, he was bald headed dude with facial hair) that gentlemen was the exact employee who quoted me $449 on a Paldean Fates ETB that was on the shelf for $274.99 after rescanning it at the register. I’m not saying I have any issues with this employee or any employees, in fact they were all very helpful other times I have visited. The issue of re-pricing items in front of paying customer’s faces I would assume is made at a level above their decision. Feel free to upload whatever video you want, assuming you don’t clip the film to fit your narrative, it will document PRECISELY what I...
Read moreIt's always fun to go to CM Games if you're planning on just looking. They have a huge collection of retro games for pretty much any console, but the main problem is that all the games are extremely overpriced. If you want to get some cash for your old games, do not bring them here. Places like CM Games and Gamestop give you pocket change for your games, compared to how much they're actually worth. Before you sell anything here, look it up on eBay, and see how much it's worth. Then you'll see how little they give you compared to the actual value. It's really not that hard to sell on eBay, so if you want money for your games, sell them online. I've already stated all the bad things about CM Games, but that doesn't mean there's nothing good about the place. It's a really cool environment to be in. There's games, action figures, cards, and everything in between covering every inch of the store, it's really cool. Whenever you go, you almost always see a bunch of nerds sitting at a table having a good time playing D&D, MTG, Yu-Gi-Oh!, etc. Speaking of card games, CM Games is a great place to go for that. They've got a bin filled with MTG cards. You pick the ones you want and you can buy them for a few cents each. You can also get other supplies such as dice sets, deck boxes, card sleeves, etc, for a really good price here. While CM Games isn't the cheapest game store in town, It's still really fun to go to. You could literally spend hours at a time in this store looking through buckets of MTG cards, playing card games and video games with people, or marveling at the extremely expansive and rare retro games they have. Would recommend, but not if you're planning on selling. I might have seemed negative about the pricing of games here, but it's not really that overpriced. It's a good place to go for games because you know they will most likely have what you're looking for in good,...
