when i think of flatirons, i think of koinonia. fellowship. family. a church welcoming everyone with open arms, an outpouring of love, all founded on a wellspring of truth. i started going to flatirons almost a decade ago, and although it has grown exponentially since then, at its core, it has not changed. i feel just as welcome now amidst thousands of people as before when they met in the much smaller, old location across the street. jim and scott continue to tackle tough subjects while staying true to scripture when it comes to the fundamental things, rather than giving in to today's culture of tolerance. and all the while, they emphasize and re-emphasize love and grace. loving and embracing those who are different from us, those who have a messed up past or a messed up present. because "me too"-- we are all sinners, all in the same boat, and we all fall short of the glory of God. but in all of us coming together as broken people, community happens, and as we all join in to do life together, there is beauty from ashes. some would say that flatirons is too watered down, or only for baby christians. that their messages are too basic and that they just keep repeating the same concepts and teachings over and over. but i think that these fundamentals are the building blocks and i would much rather attend a church who gets the foundation right and teaches us how to apply these basics to life day in and day out than a church that gives detailed seminary-level lectures every sunday but isn't necessarily as genuine, united, or hospitable. furthermore, for those who want to dive more into their understanding of the faith, flatirons provides the opportunity to delve deeper though local small groups and various events and retreats throughout the year. flatirons is the type of church that i love to bring friends to. it fully embodies the idea that a life in Christ is a richer life, not a life about being a slave to rules or a life where you have to miss out, be boring, or never have fun. flatirons knows how to be loud in celebrating the good news and floods the community as salt and light, making lasting, positive impacts in the 303 and to the corners of the world, ultimately making people wonder what that spark is-- what this life in Christ is all about. even though i haven't lived in colorado for years now, i still attend flatirons whenever i'm back to visit, and can still feel connected through their video messages online. and every time i spot an orange and white sticker on the back of someone's car or a 'me too' shirt, i smile. because God is on the move and He is doing...
Read moreMoved to Boulder about five years ago was living in Parker going to Southwest community Church. I haven’t been able to find a church have kept hearing about you need to try flat irons. Attended a Christmas Eve service tonight Lafayette, flat irons and I cannot even begin to tell you how disappointed I was in it. I love music I love love music and I’m always so moved by especially Christmas music- this church the music was so darn loud. I couldn’t even understand what they were saying. There is no reason for it to be that loud . Don’t get me wrong I love love music. I am such a music person, especially Christian music, but this was so off the charts. I just want to say why why ? They did sing silent night, but I don’t think there was another Christmas song.. I thought OK I can’t compare it to Southwest cause obviously this is nothing like what I’m used to. As I prayed, I thought- is the devil trying to Discourage me ? Ok let it go - and then the pastor started. I think his name was Jim. I’ve never heard such an unmoving service in my life. In the very beginning he even brought on his dog on stage - kind of confused on how he was relating adopting a dog to the Christmas story? He was talking so fast was like my gosh did he have 15 cups of coffee before he came on stage? I know you’re gonna say that sounds crazy, but I swear to you he was talking so fast. I don’t wanna hear about his dog or his red shirt that he ordered off of Amazon I wanted a real moving Christian Christmas message…. in the very beginning, I felt like he was a comedian ? Not interested in hearing funny stories either on Christmas, come on.. This is a Christmas Eve service what??? I brought someone with me tonight and I was telling them how move they will be with the music. I just went on and on about how awesome I think it’s going to be when we left the church he said is that what you consider awesome? Couldn’t explain it… Maybe I’m missing the whole thing maybe it’s this particular pastor. I’m just so sad that it left me so empty tonight after I left this church never had that feeling before. . OK for me it just wasn’t a good experience. I’m sure some people don’t have anything to compare it with and didnt know the difference There had to be at least 2000 people there tonight and this pastor would’ve had the opportunity to reach so many it’s a shame ! Well, also, I have to say there were plenty of people that did enjoy the service and God bless and God love them🙏🏻 I don’t wanna start any strive i just was so...
Read moreI'm not religious at all, however, I am curious, supportive, and try to always have an open to mind. It never hurts to learn or experience something new. Some great friends of mine attend this church and invited me to go with them. I was impressed! It is so organized and seems to be very well run. The place is huge! There is a giant entrance hall of sorts where bagels are served and people can mingle. There is a beautiful art diplay made from photos of church members' tattoos. I thought that was pretty awesome. There is comfortable seating and there are also TVs for those that prefer to watch the service away from the crowd. (When I say crowd, I mean CROWD - There were a ton of people there!) There are classes for the kids to attend, but not your typical Sunday school classes. These classes are way cool, with all kinds of activities for the kids to partake in, such as a zipline and climbing structures. I'm not sure about the teaching methods in the classes, but I do know that they learned a religious lesson of some sort while attending their class. All the kids were registered on site, and given an ID #. If the parent needed to be contacted while attending the service, the child's ID # was posted on an LED board in the church, notifying the parent, without the need to interrupt the service. They were also very careful about making sure the children were only released to the registered parent upon dismissal. The church part itself is quite dark, with concert lighting. There are two levels - basically a main floor and a balcony. There is a large stage with enough room for the pastor and the band. It really did remind me of being at a concert. The music was excellent and quite loud. Ear plugs were available to those that wished to wear them. The service was nice. The pastor was laid back but well spoken. The message he shared was suitable for people of different faiths. Being a nonreligious person, I found some of it to be a little far fetched, however, that's just my personal opinion. I appreciated that it was very positive. He showed pre-recorded videos of some of the church members, and what was happening in their lives, as an alternative to just preaching. It was a nice, modern touch. I attended in the summer, yet found it to be quite chilly in the balcony where I was seated, so consider bringing a sweater with you. In all, I enjoyed...
