A year ago I switched from store 41 (Millersville pike) to store 17 (Fruitville Pike) because 41's deli was slow, had an inconsistent ham selection, non-pleasant customer service and inconsistent operating hours. And the store generally was not as well kept as store 17, Fruitville Pike.
Today I dropped into 41 to grab one thing and thought I should pass by the deli just to check in because lately, at 17, the service has also become unpleasant and slow (one person working both deli and food service), being seen and not acknowledged, finishing food service machine and cleaning tasks before finally, slowly making it over to me. This occurs on Sundays, at 430 pm, every week.
And I always purchase Krakus Imported ham, at least 1lb per week. Although Krakus is listed on the sign, ever since about 8 months ago, getting 17's to keep it in stock is nearly impossible. I ask every deli/foodservice person I come into contact with to pass the messege onto the manager, but I have zero confidence they do so. Last week, the deli manager was working the shift on my usual Sunday and was very prompt, stacked my ham perfectly, and overall pleasant, assuring me that she would order the Krakus ham and it would be in this week, but that if it didn't sell enough she wouldn't be able to continue carrying it. I understand that of course, but it was always around before, so I'm confident it would stick around... If she ordered it. She didn't. Katrina, the Deli manager at 17 a month or two ago that came and went within a month or two (why Weis shuffles their managers around so much is perplexing to me) she kept Krakus ham in stock and we talked and she said it should have always been in stock because it does sell enough to keep it around. But alas, she's been transfered to a different store, and now I'm back to terrible service, inconsistent selection, and a less than pleasant experience at the deli everytime I go. It's my first stop so it doesn't set a good tone for the rest of my visit, that's for sure.
You see, Krakus isn't just the best tasting cooked ham. It's also priced precisely in the middle (8.99) of the Dietz and Watson gourmet light cooked ham (12.49) and the regular low priced cooked ham (6.49). It's the best tasting and the best cost. Plus it's actually imported, unlike the other "imported brand" or Weis quality "imported ham", the latter of which actually costs more than the real imported Krakus ham at 10.49 (?).
I have always been a Weis shopper. All my life. And I worked at store 41 approximately 10 years ago, in the deli, and as food service manager. This was a time where the Deli was extremely busy. Looking back, we were killing it at store 41, and it's not hard. It's a matter of keeping people like Katrina in their place. Allowing them to make the deli their baby, pay them well, and make them feel appreciated. People like her set the tone for the rest of the employees, and keeping them in place ensures consistency over the longer term.
So I don't know what to do. I don't really want to go back to shopping at 41 because 17 is larger and has a bigger selection of just about everything, but by the looks of 41's produce department today, I might have to. The produce department was neat, well kept, fully stocked, and had a person working the department when I needed help finding my Brussels sprouts. There is never a person working in the produce section at 17 on Sundays at 430, and things like green onions look like they've been sitting there for more than a few days, the iceberg lettuce selection is limited to half a dozen heads or less, sometimes totally out of stock, and the asparagus has been sitting in it's place for so long the tips are totally shriveled up and dry. How long does that take exactly when you have asparagus sitting in water? Whatever it is, it's far too long.
Anyways, I keep getting disappointed, I don't want to start going to Giant, Stauffers, or Wegmans, but if things don't get back to normal I'll just seek out my preferred ham and pleasant service...
ย ย ย Read moreWeis markets are generally adequate but customer service in general at all the stores is deficient. This store is not an exception. The store is clean and well stocked, but no one knows their inventory, there is no method of checking for inventory and no one is concerned that they cannot assist anyone in locating items.
This particular store is the newer and larger of the 2 stores near East Petersburg. This store is better than the Manheim Pike location. Most of people at the Manheim Pike store should have retired decades ago.
There are some products that are only available from this particular Weis location. I like the "fresh" deli items. I continue to shop here due to those facts, but I have no loyalty to Weis corporation in general. I tend to...
