Millions of people see this mountain everyday at the end of Cheyenne and most people probably admire it but very few people ever climb it. It looks deceptively close and easy from the city. When you get to it it is anything but. For one thing it is almost impossible to get to. Do not try to climb it from the lowlands off of lake Mead or far hills the entire thing is surrounded in Cliff bands that are very steep and many of them look like you could possibly find a way up but then they lead you to dead ends. I have climbed all over this mountain many times. If you try climbing the ridge line that is near the neighborhood, it is possible to do but you need to be a pretty good climber. It would not be for somebody who is afraid of heights or exposure because near the top there are parts where you are surrounded with huge drops on either side and you have to use all four points of contact to climb. The safer but much longer way to climb is to go towards the end far to the north and then work your way up diagonally and then along the ridge line. In that case it's not really hard it's just long and grueling. The rock is very sharp, there's lots of plants that are spiky and there is no real trail You just have to scramble over rocks. It does feel sort of rewarding to do, but I would not recommend this unless you are in very good shape, have very durable hiking boots or shoes, and are not afraid of heights. Also you would need to have many hours of time, because it ended up being a little over 8 mi of distance and it was...
Read moreThe trailhead is located between two mountains that lead to a network of interconnected smaller trails. The looping trail is on the side of the mountain which is narrow with dirt and rocks that can get slippery in some sections. The looping trail has several exits to other trails that lead away from the mountain southward towards another range of mountains. The second mountain is smaller and has less elevation with a flag at the top. The pathway up to the flag is not clearly marked. In between both mountains is a dry river bed that connects to other smaller trails on the back of the hill. The southside has a development of houses that are visible as you hike. The parking lot is paved and restrooms are on site. Easy to moderate hike....
