This review is for Time Machine, this location's newest room.
It's a new room that's still being worked out, but the game has little puzzle solving and mostly just direction following. While there's fun stuff pertaining to Tesla's experiments it feels much more like a museum than actually being in his lab.
For our experience we booked the latest time slot, and the location seemed to have several games happening at once. Our room still had some kind of liquid spill beside the desk that was never cleaned up. It was likely water or vomit from the previous group as someone was sick in the waiting room. Good work team.
We were told we were about a minute off from making the top 3 times on the leaderboard......however what wasn't accounted for was the 3-4 minutes we had to figure out the "neat trick" of the room wasn't working because it wasn't reset properly and a chemical piece wasn't replaced. We would have been in a top spot had they considered their lack of proper reset.
Lastly there NEEDS to be a warning for this room for claustrophobia. The ending of the room forces your party into a tight space for several minutes too long and I was close to a panic attack. There's no reason this end sequence needs to take as long as it does, and there's no ventilation in the smoky enclosure which makes things worse. This ending sequence should not include a victory speech (which is barely audible as it's coming from the room you just left) and a way too long sequence that attempts to provide a theatrical moment for the event taking place. Get into the space, close the door, insert the item and set the dials, make a quick deal that lasts 15-20 seconds, and let the players out.
We've done every room in this location at this point, and thoroughly enjoyed Turing Test and the first half of Orphanage. 60Out has typically been hit or miss with their games, but this was the first time I felt I needed to speak up about...
Read moreThis review is for the Turing Test. We were really excited about this escape room, and we loved the idea of starting in separate rooms. However, of the 10+ rooms we've done in LA, this was by far the worst. To me, a good escape room has difficult puzzles and an intuitive flow. This was the opposite. The Turing Test puzzles were simple and uncreative while the flow was convoluted. Overall, a horribly designed room with poorly functioning mechanics and inattentive game admins. Felt like a complete waste of time and money.
The details:
Rooms mechanics do not work well. Some puzzles are very fiddly (i.e., you solved the puzzle, but the system wasn't triggered). Some examples: 1) puzzles had to be redone multiple times because we were either doing them too slowly or too quickly, 2) the method of communication with teammates across separate rooms immediately activated from some players, but was delayed for others, 3) there's a smell-based puzzle but it's weirdly inaccurate; one clue smelled like absolutely nothing to all players
Inattentive admin. We called for admin multiple times, and received either no response or a very delayed response. Perhaps some of the faulty mechanics would have been less annoying if the admins had been more present
Game flow is exceptionally awkward. For example, you'll have solved all the puzzles in a given room, but the next door won't open. So, you'll stand around wondering what you did wrong until, at last, the admin tells you there's actually nothing left to do and you need to wait for other players
Similar to the above, it was unclear if some doors were unlocked or not. Had to wait for guidance from admins before opening because we didn't want to use excessive force on doors
Don't think I can elaborate on this last point without saying too much, but the game ending is extremely...
Read moreReally disappointed with my experience here. We did the Turing Test. Lots of components were just broken. Sensors weren’t working, buttons fell off, and our gamemaster had to manually unlock certain doors for us. This led to at least a couple instances of us second-guessing and re-attempting puzzles that we’d solved correctly on the first try. Bummer. There were some fun concepts in these rooms that were absolutely ruined by the failure in execution.
To top it all off, our gamemaster kept giving us unsolicited hints. I’m not sure why this was. I even asked at one point that he stop providing us so many hints. He did not stop. My best guess is that it had something to do with getting us out of there faster. Our puzzle started pretty late (there was a large party ahead of us) and there were groups waiting when we finished. Whatever the reason, it made for a much less enjoyable experience. It was more of a simon says than an escape room.
I’m giving two stars because there was a really nice employee who left just as we got there. She had a great energy, got us very excited, and seemed to really...
