Skull Cave, isn't what most people expect. You are not supposed to get near it, it's blocked off for the most part. The story says that it used to be much larger, large enough for a horse to fit inside, but that people collapsed most of it over the years, as the limestone was brittle, so now it's much less of a cave and more of a hole in a rock. Many people will tell you it's not worth the hike, but you walk right past it to see so many other things, why not stop and check it out. Read moreGreat history here. Unfortunately that's the best part of it. They had to close it off in the 70s due to safety and now it's not much to see. Luckily the free fort Holmes is nearby and the lookout point and sugar loaf is nearby also. Definitely worth the trip to the center of the island. The tours drive by the cave but don't stop due to the fact it's closed off. Still a great deal of history and near to look at. Not a skull but there is done inside they say. We were also told that it was never shaped like a skull. It's only that a white man hid there by a Native American happened upon heaps of skulls and bones in the cave, that it became be known as Skull Cave.
