Read moreI've been to Mackinac Island three or four times throughout my life, and from what I can recall, I have never actually been outside of the titular main city and fort while visiting. For this reason, I made it a goal for us to visit the Arch Rock landmark while we were on the island. To get to Arch Rock, we exited out the back of Fort Mackinac and turned right (westward). After a couple hundred feet we came to a woods where we found a fork in the road. Left, middle and right. We decided upon the middle bike trail which made for a beautiful trek directly to the rock, about 15-20 minutes of walking total. The trail was clean, well shaded and included numerous informative plaques about the flora present on the trail. Upon getting to Arch Rock we saw the magnificent structure that triggered my climber's itch. Of course, climbing is not allowed on the rock but a boy can dream. Arch Rock is one of the most iconic and breathtaking sights on Mackinac Island. This massive natural limestone arch rises about 150 feet above Lake Huron, offering absolutely stunning views of the shoreline, water, and surrounding forest. The formation itself is incredible — shaped naturally over thousands of years — and it's hard not to be amazed by its size and how perfectly it's framed by the scenery. It’s especially beautiful in the early morning or late afternoon when the light filters through the trees and the water glows beneath. You can reach it easily by bike, horse-drawn carriage, or a scenic hike. The viewing platform is well-maintained and provides spectacular photo opportunities. There's also historical signage explaining the geology and Native American legends connected to the site.
