Escape Rooms in Minnesota

Disclaimer: I work at another escape room in the twin cities not affiliated with Enigma. I've also done over 50 rooms. I had a very good time at Enigma doing the Istanbul Gambit. We had a mixed group of adults and kids. Even with a hug group, everyone was able to contribute and have fun. The owner/game master was fun and gave us a hint when we were confused even though our time was good. The room itself was decorated well in theme. It contained a good combination of locks and electronics. The digital keypads also did not lock you out after a certain amount of tries (which was important with the kids 😁). They also had a bonus puzzle that isn't required but if we beat the room quickly then it adds to the mission! I really like that concept. They are in process of building their next room and I am very excited to play it!!

They have 2 escape rooms, one pirate theme and I think a haunted theme. We did the pirate room. Each room was custom built by the owner, including all booby traps, story, everything. The pirate room was great. Story, clues and atmosphere really pulled you in. It was just challenging enough. We did escape with only 37 seconds left. We will definitely go back, not just to try the other escape room, but because it’s inside of a WhirlyBall facility and that also looks fun.

Don't be turned off by your lack of choice in a escape room. Yes they only have one room so far but it is the coolest escape room I've ever seen. It was built and designed from the ground up to be an escape room, its not some office space decorated up and containing a bunch of locked containers. It really feels like you are in a bunker and the cool things you'll discover separates this experience from any other escape room you have done. The back story is super detailed however its not just given to you, you have to piece it together from the clues and evidence you'll find. I did this with a friend and even with 2 people we got through most of it without help, however the game master does a really good job with keeping track of the time and giving little hints into what direction you should be heading in order to complete the room on time. He would not outright tell you what to do unless you actually asked so it was much appreciated. My friend and I were lucky to be able to talk to the guy who designed and built the room (I'm so sorry I cant remember his name) for about 20 mins after we were done and I was completely astounded by how much work and extra little details he had thought about to make this a believable experience. They dont actually lock you into the room so if you have to step out to use the bathroom or make a phone call you can. Also NO MATH PUZZLES! This is one of those things that I wish I could lose my memories just to be able to do it all over again, but instead I have to wait until they finish their other room. Seriously check this place out, you...

NO spoilers I've done both escape rooms and you will not be disappointed!! I did the Istanbul room during summer 2022 and the Pirate room Dec. 2022. The quality of these rooms is insanely good and I recommend both. If you're trying to decide which one, here are my thoughts:

Istanbul: This one was definitely a bit harder. The theme itself was more intense (whereas the pirate one is better for kids). We were a group of five adults with average to no prior escape room experience. It was a ton of fun and really well done, but we barely "escaped"... (We solved the task but didn't escape the room). I thought this was my favorite escape room I've ever tried until I tried their Pirate room last week!

Pirates: WOW!! I'm still on a high from this room! I liked this room more because it was a bit more beginner friendly but still difficult, and the theme was more lighthearted. REALLY cool reveals the whole way through. The surprises kept coming! We were a group of six adults. Definitely a better fit for younger players.

We really appreciated that the room moderator kept us on track with time to at least give us a chance to get out!

SPOILERS AHEAD (suggestion for Pirates room):

If someone from Enigma reads this, please consider painting the skeleton keys on the piano. It was extremely difficult to see which keys were which even with the "ruler" underneath. The only reason I could play the song at the end was because I played piano growing up, and it still took three tries to play it correctly. I suggest painting the top "fingers" black to mimic a...

The room design was good, but the game master who was the creator completely ruined the experience. He continued to give us clues we did not ask for even after one of us said “we would have figured that out ourselves”. Also, the interruptions over and over when we were talking amount ourselves. It was the worst game master etiquette we have encountered.

After expressing the multiple issues after, he kept making excuses that it was our fault, we needed the help, etc. He also kept saying if we were doing the harder room we would have definitely needed hints. 1) We didn’t do the hard room. 2) I booked this for my husband’s birthday (he knew) who has done close to 15 rooms wants the challenge, not to be led through. 3) the intro video contradicts that they ask before giving clues. 4) he said we need the clues but we finished with over 17 minutes remaining.

Somehow the experience was our fault because we were a bad group?? I would never recommend this...
