Last night my BFF and I took our 5 mixed girls (this is an important part) roller skating at Marysville Skate Center from 7-10pm. The girls are ages 9-13 and pretty decent kids.
The 3 older ones came up to us at 8:15 and said, āwe want to go. The owner is racistā! WTH? Apparently an older white lady skating went to complain to an employee at the skate counter the 3 older girls commented on a girls pants and laughed and they were cussing and being rude. But the little 2 girls were good kids. The counter worker took it to Mike, the owner. Owner Mike comes up telling them at the claw grab machine thing, this is a place of peace and love. That they need to watch themselves. As heās talking, my looks away to one of the girls and he tells her, you need to look at me when Iām talking to you. Do not look away from me!
This is my point and the oddity of it all: #1 My half black daughter has been there many times with her white friends without issue. Comes with 2 other black girls for the first time, thereās a problem.
#2 The 5 girls were with us most of the time either talking to us, or waiting for food and drinks. We watched them skating because it was comical since none were all that great. We watched them on the other side of the rink at the claw machine because there were a couple CREEPY older men there alone skating that just seemed odd to be 30 and 50 years old when itās mostly tweens and teens.
#3 We were the only parents there. If there was an issue, why didnāt the older lady or the owner come to us? Why go directly confronting the girls?
#4 Over the music and quickly skating by and the crowd, how did this old woman hear them? Does she have super sonic hearing?
Ive also known 3 of the 5 girls their whole lives and how theyāre raised. BFF and I find the whole story hard to believe! Someone got scared seeing 5 black girls in Marysville thinking the worst and made something up.
We packed up and left skating not even half way through the night. Trying to salvage what was supposed to be a fun night.
Iāll never go skating there again. Owner Mike is a racist spineless coward confronting 3 13yo girls. BEWARE IF...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe Marysville Skate Center is a fun, cheap option for families to go and get some exercise while listening to some enjoyable, throwback music!
The value for the money canāt be beat. The open skate is roughly $7 per person (add a couple bucks extra for rollerblades) for 3 hours of wholesome family fun!
The games during the open skate keep the kids entertained, and make the hours āroll on byā (see what I did there?! Lol)!
There were a few issues, as to be expected, with any older facility.
The wheels on my roller skates were at different levels of ātightness,ā so I had to ask for assistance with loosening them up to be able to skate a little more freely. It was not a problem for the staff because apparently this happens all the time, but it has happened the last two times I was there which was a bit frustrating.
The womenās restroom is also in really bad shape! There wasnāt a lock on the stall I was in, it was a complete mess, and it didnāt look like it was cleaned in a hot minute!
Lastly, and this is in no way the facilities fault, just expect a general lack of self-awareness from a lot of your fellow skaters. This regularly caused close encounters between patrons and was just plain dangerous. So, just bring your A game, and be on the lookout while skating because otherwise you will find yourself on the ground! Honestly, it would be a great idea if the facility could implement like a āslow laneā or a lane on the floor for kids with parents to help regulate things, but I donāt even know if that would help honestly?
Anyway, this is a fun, cheap, family-friendly establishment! Itās old, so expect there to be issues, but as long as you can set those aside, you will...
