Friendly staff and quick service. The interior was clean and orderly with the building appearing to be in relatively good repair. (Ceiling tiles are painted but I didn't see any signs of leaks or damage.) Can't comment on the restrooms as we didn't use the facilities.
Very reasonable prices but this comes with the caveat that you will pay for food that is on the whole bland and visually unappealing.
We ordered the Gen Tao's lunch combo and the No. 3 dinner. Tea was brought immediately which was nice. Our appetizer soups followed shortly after. The hot and sour soup was one of the worst I've had as it was neither hot nor sour. It seemed like all the right stuff was in it but just not enough. I am used to a little punch from my hot and sour and found this one lacking though it was full of tofu, mushrooms, etc.
Lunch arrived and disappointment set in immediately. The Gen Tao's was fine but the fried rice on both our plates was way too heavily loaded with white pepper, a flavor I like, but I've never known it as the dominate flavor of any fried rice so it was strange and mildly off putting.
The almond chicken was not overly hot (kept in a warmer?), the chicken was dry, and the flavor was bland. The gravy on top was a sickening color of yellow with a similarly sickening semi-solid gloopy texture rather than something smooth. Like the chicken it was slopped onto it had no distinct flavor to speak of so I am wondering what the point of the color was and what it came from?
The sweet and sour pork was very hot (so made fresh) but it was tough to chew. The sauce was awful and might as well have been the collected contents of packets of cheap highlighter pink colored sweet and sour you would get with Safeway take-out egg-rolls. It was gross.
Finally the chicken chow mein was white, cool, and essentially uncooked. I don't know how you can stir-fry anything and have it end up that color and be that temperature unless it was in the pan no more than a minute. I ended up leaving all of my chow mein, 3/4 of the almond chicken, and a decent pile of rice.
We will not...
Read moreA disappointing experience. Service is normally pretty good, attentive, pleasant, and efficient. Food is good for what it is, yes greasy as others said, and portions good. It was slower than normal this day, and the parking lot was nearly full. Good to see. I placed an order for two Shrimp Egg Fu Yung at 5:18PM this day, in person, and was told it would be 20 minutes. People arrived in front of me and five others after me, and all got their orders well before me, and all before I finally got my order at 6:07PM. 59 minutes, is not 20 minutes, but hey everyone else got their food, and larger orders in 15-20 minutes. When a waitress brought all of the other to-go orders it was then she asked what my order even was, because she didn't have another one but remembered me; she looked back in the orders and saw mine. Too bad I paid and tipped mightily when I ordered (LESSON - wait until your get your food). She went back to the kitchen and I watched the discussion. Only then did my order begin, but I was told they "were still working on it - it would be awhile" - that was 39 minutes later nearly double my 20 minutes, and eventually once arrived one minute shy of an hour. I would have appreciated the truth and not a fib, hey, they lost my order, missed it, whatever, give me a freebie, or take some amount off my order for my patience and patronage, but don't lie. I would have appreciated an apology and been more understanding. Hey, simple mistakes happen. It wasn't their best moment. I was a customer for decades, and I may continue, but Beijing Palace on State Ave. deserves more of my business from now on. Frankly Beijing has a nicer interior and the portions are every bit as good. The parking lot is easier to...
Read more4.5 Stars. The food is good, the service is great. We go every few months and they have our order down pat, including drinks, soups, and our side order of pot stickers.
Some dishes are better than others. For instance, I absolutely love their chow mein and I could eat it all day. However, despite being exceptional a few years back, their Mongolian beef now lacks flavor and the spice completely takes over what flavor there is. That being said, I did recently try the Mongolian beef with a two star spice rating instead of our typical three or four stars and was pleasantly surprised. Although it lacked the spice we like, the flavor was there and it was good. I will be ordering it that way in the future.
Their pot stickers are also amazing - soft on top and crispy on the bottom. I would guess pan fried? I don't know for sure. All I know is I've never had them this way anywhere else and that is a damn shame. They're fantastic. On the other hand, their egg flower soup leaves a little to be desired. Not bad, but not great. I've had better elsewhere.
Their menu is consistent in it's inconsistency. But although it's hit and miss, their hits are home runs and the service is icing on the cake. This place 100% beats out all the other local Chinese restaurants that I've tried, but we know what we like which makes a difference. If you've been here before and weren't happy with the food, I suggest coming back and trying something else before writing it off completely. Highly...
