I want to preface this review with saying the tech was extremely kind and personable and I am in no way trying to criticize her, just the service itself.
I received the 60 minute moisturizing head spa as a gift. Drove 2 hours, and unfortunately I can't say it was worth it.
I believe my tech's name was Keisha. She greeted us at the door kindly and escorted us in. She didn't confirm the service and since it was a gift I was a bit in the dark on what to expect. She walked me in and set me down to perform the scalp analysis which consisted of parting my hair a few time and then moving on to asking me to change. It was less than 2 minutes and I ended up asking what state my scalp was in during the service (to which she simply said it looked good) since she didn't offer any info.
The service started, and we held a nice conversation, although it did take away from the relaxing atmosphere. The upper body massage was very fast and a bit rough. She moved on to what I think was treating my scalp, but I was not told what was happening or what products were used. Although I mentioned I was tender headed, the handling was still a bit rough, but I had already let go of the advertised relaxation element of the spa, and saw it just as scalp deep clean.
After that, I was left in the room for a length of time, but once again I wasn't sure of how long as there wasn't clear communication around it. About 5 minutes later the halo water device cut off so I was just laying with no water running. As I was waiting for her to return, the background spa music switched to loud social media nosies for a split second a few times, from what I'm guessing was her checking her phone that was connected to the speakers in the room. When she came back in to cut the water back on, it shot out freezing cold. It slowly warmed up, but was inconsistent temperature the rest of the time which again, took away from the relaxing effect.
When the service was done, we blowdryed. I have very thick hair 3b/c, and she split it into 4 sections. I was most interested in getting a headspa service from The Lace Lab because they are black owned and I trusted them to detangle as necessary. That was an assumption on my part, and it didn't pan out. The blow dry was very rough, especially with such big, tangled sections and left my scalp sore at the end.
Overall, it wasn't a very enjoyable experience. Once again, the tech was very kind and I truly enjoyed our conversation. However, I think there are a few key areas that need improvement for this service to feel worth the premium price, especially for out of towners.
*Communication: All massage/facial services I've every received walked me through the process and products used, as well as checking in periodically about pressure, sensation, etc. I think this head spa service could benefit greatly from a similar practice.
*More Focus on Relaxation: The tools were there, such as the heated table and the halo water jet, but they weren't utilized in a way that maximized relaxing due to the issues I mentioned above. Curating a spa atmosphere requires a little more intentionality. Blackout curtains, lower volume speaking, etc could help with this element as well.
*Include Drying: the headspa service is essentially a wash with fancy tools. Drying should be included. If anything should have an uncharge, it's detangling, but an uncharged to dry for a wash service feels a bit weird. The expectation to pay an extra $75 or walk out with wet hair (especially in the winter like now) puts a bit of a bad taste in the client's mouth. Also, I would have liked to have a choice between a classic blowdry or diffusing as a curly girl.
Overall, I am disappointed and hope my experience was just an off day. I've had much more relaxing washes in hair salon sinks, and didn't find my scalp to be particularly moisturized after (my scalp started flaking the next day), so both pieces of the promised result missed the mark for me and didn't meet expectations. Once again, my tech was very sweet and I hope she doesn't take any of...
Read moreBooked the 60 min Head Spa service and a braid down. The head spa service itself is great but needs to be performed by someone else. I booked in September and was excited to make the hours long drive for it. The appt was then canceled day of, claiming COVID scare and she was shutting down to test (I was confused because rapid tests work but I let it go). I had to bring up the possibility of rescheduling. We reached a date in October. The week of the appt, she texts and asks if she can push my appt back so she can clean between clients. I said no because I’m coming from out of town and I needed to be back in town at a particular time. She then says that she had an earlier time that day…I agree to being moved up. I drive for 3 hours and miss the exit I’m supposed to get off on to get to the shop. I text to let her know and that getting back on track would have me ten minutes late to the appt. She says okay. When I walk in, she doesn’t greet me but instead says that she can’t braid my hair because I was late and she would have another client. Starting with that statement instantly threw my mood off and if I hadn’t driven 3 hours, I would have left. The head spa service went on and she blew dried my hair then put it in a ponytail. Her next client wasn’t even there when I left. She didn’t offer even to put it in two braids. Then when I went to pay she said because I was paying with a card, there was a 3% fee. (The 3% fee is to be the responsibility of the business owner, not the client). I will wait to have that experience again with someone with better soft...
