My wife and I are non-swimmers. But we are comfortable doing easy water sports with life jackets. This was our first snorkeling experience.
This was an amazing experience for us. This gently pushed our boundaries and we will definitely try snorkeling whenever possible in the future.
We took private tour. Our guide Ed was very patient and explained us how to use the gear and how to snorkel. He also explained the types of fishes using a book before going in. That helped us to understand what we are seeing while we are snorkeling. Note that they don't use a boat, they just take you to 200 ft from the shore by swimming. Boogie board really helped. Ed took us to a location where the sea is calmer and waited until the wind calmed down further.
We felt completely safe and comfortable all the time, even with 50 feet depth. We saw dozens of types of fishes, coral reef and several turtles as close as three feet from us. It was so much fun even after 1.5 hours of snorkeling.
He also provided two layers of wet suit to keep us warm. That really helped. We highly recommend going with them, especially for non-swimmers and novice snorkelers. If you are a non-swimmer, take a private tour to keep the full attention on you. That's totally worth it.
One thing they can improve is the length of the tour. During booking, they mentioned as 7.30 to 11.30, but they brought us back to the shore by 10.10 even though we spent the first one hour driving, wearing the gear and learning from the books. Essentially it was only 1.5 hours of snorkeling. They could split it into two one-hour sessions with a break in between. Considering 1.5 hours, the price seems expensive.
Overall, very pleasant and...
Read moreThis was our first time to Hawaii and we wanted to snorkel. We originally thought about the boat that takes you out to Molokini but landed on Maui Snorkeling Tours and boy are we glad we did. If you want to go out on a boat with 50 other people and have some college guys toss you over and say be careful then the boat tour is the way to go. If you want a personal (and I mean personal) private snorkeling adventure with 5-7 people and the most educated cool guide, then Suzy Robinson and MST is the way to go. We have a family of 4 with an 11 year old and 14 year old. All of us where a little scared to do it but Suzy makes you feel so comfortable and safe about the adventure. She will talk to you first about your equipment and how it all works, then educate you on what you will see (and ask you what you want to see) take you out and personally snorkel with you and point things out and finally host a beach side snack wrap up after the snorkeling which is such a great touch! No spending all day on a boat was particularly attractive to us. here you just walk in right from the beach which was great. This was the highlight of our trip to Maui. Her personal attention makes it a step above all of the others. I would not even consider another company after experiencing this with MST. Before booking, I read no less than 100 reviews on trip adviser that were just like mine above. That gave me enough confidence that it was going to be great and she exceeded our expectations. Would not book with another company. Thanks Suzy for a...
Read moreI researched Maui Snorkeling options for weeks and came upon Maui snorkel tours. I am so glad I did. My husband and I have snorkeled before, but our girls, 15 and 12, have not. They are solid swimmers but cautious in open ocean. I didn't want a boat tour that would just drop anchor and leave you to your own devices. Then we found Maui Snorkel Tours in Kihei. Toby was our guide and he was amazing. It was just the four of us and him. We stayed in Kihei but the local snorkeling conditions weren't great so he took us to Honolua Bay! How lucky for us. He spent almost an hour teaching us how to use the equipment, getting the kids comfortable and teaching us about the fish and other sea creatures we would see. We entered from the shore and swam past the tour boats that had dropped anchor, their patrons swimming aimlessly- stepping on the coral reef with their fins!!! Toby taught us how to care for the world we were visiting and he took us to a turtle cleaning station where we saw 8 green sea turtles. It was amazing. We had 13 turtle sightings that day! He paid close attention to our 15 year old, who had had brain surgery 6 months earlier, to make sure she was comfortable. He pointed out everything and even free dove a bit to point out harder to see creatures. It was beyond what we could have hoped for. The girls said it was the highlight of the trip- and we did a lot!! Toby is the kindest man with a big heart and so much knowledge about Hawaii's reefs and history. We will never forget this trip or Toby. Book it now - especially if...
