Nice historical area where you can learn about the history of the southwest and how New Mexico became part of the US. The plaza is part of a Historic District and is a national historic landmark. It's a nice spot to sit and relax. Billy the Kid was put on trial and sentenced to hang at the old County Courthouse which is now the corner gift shop.
The Historic District is filled with tourist shops that includes a book store, chocolate shop, pecan store, and other specialty shops. There are many restaurants and a couple of wineries. The plaza is located right across from the Basilica of San Albino and is surrounded by numerous boutique shops and restaurants. This entire mesilla area has no shaded parking for travelers with dogs, no public restrooms (while many of the businesses dont have restrooms either), the handicapped parking (full) is located on the only curb without a ramp, and the only drinking fountain in the entire embarrassment is turned off. This is the middle of the desert, 100+ degrees, and Mesilla can't provide any tap water for the tourists to drink? The staff at the big church are also incredible ungodly.
