First stop in Las Cruces was a nice little restaurant called "La Posta de Masilla". This was in a cool little town that was all adobe style buildings that looked to have been standing there a century or so. There was a small Aviary and some fish tanks with some exotic varieties of fish in the waiting area by the podium. A lot of really nice artwork on the walls as well promoting the 80+ years they have been in service. There was a small taproom style area and multiple dining room areas.
They had a pretty decent selection of cerveza's from Mexico so I decided to go that route and got a "Bohemia". Chas and Val got themselves Sangria Margarita's which were exactly what they said...a basic frozen margarita with house sangria swirled through. We shared the Fiesta Nachos as an appetizer and I was pretty happy with them. Honestly, nothing that I would have made a very big deal over, but much better than most Nachos offered by most restaurants. The shredded beef on them seemed to be either marinated in green chile's, or cooked with them. Packed a bit of a punch but nothing too crazy. If you added some of the homemade salsa to these it was spicier, and delicious! I believe these were in the ballpark of $11 and if you are extra hungry they are definitely worth a look, but if you are just normal meal time hungry...there is A LOT of food on some of these entree's.
Carne Adovada - So this dish was like a New Mexican beef stew. It was listed as a traditional New Mexican dish on the menu and I wanted to try something authentic to the area. The meat was extremely tender, just fell apart in your mouth. The sauce was good...a tomato and pepper kind of sauce that was very thick. Not a ton of spice, but a good amount of seasonings. I was very surprised by the refried beans here as well. I have had them many times before but maybe only a handful of times in my life did I enjoy them at all. Good flavor and not 100% mush like most places. For roughly $13 you get a really good amount of home cooked food and an authentic taste of the state's history.
Chicken and Steak Fajitas - We also had an order of just steak fajitas at the table as well, but the meats from these (as well as the onions and peppers) were delicious. The pico de gallo and guacamole were also incredibly fresh and well seasoned. It is hard to really say much more about this dish because when fajitas are done properly, all you can say is yum and then tear into them. Very enjoyable. I believe both fajita plates came in around the ballpark of $15 - $16.
Definitely drop in and try this place out if you're...
Read moreThis place is wonderfully nostalgic, historical, in the old part of Las Cruces. We are visiting from out of town and were told by friends we had to visit. I see the draw of the place with its beautiful decorations, live birds, fish tanks, and endless decorated dining rooms. I'm sure for locals, this may be a special go-to. However, for us we were deeply disappointed in our visit. We were sat pretty quickly, but ended up waiting for what felt like 20 minutes before we had any sort of attention or water on our table. Our server was kind and kept telling us he would be back, but it was never very quickly. I ordered the El Classico margarita and my husband ordered the Patrona because their descriptions stated that they are for those who love the taste of tequila. When they arrived, we both felt that the margaritas were only lime juice. We tasted absolutely no tequila in either drink. They were very hard to stomach. I ordered the vegetarian combo, and he ordered the combo #1. The chili relleno on my plate was mostly bread, severely flattened with little flavor. The rice was crunchy as if it had been sitting out all day. Their green chili is good. On his plate, the tamale was still wrapped in the husk, but when he opened it, the masa was hardened as if it had been under the warmer and dried out all day. When we brought it to the attention of the waiter, he tried to tell us that it was because it was steam cooked. I was shocked that he tried to justify a hardened tamale. He eventually brought us a new one, it wasn't hard, but it was tasteless. The red chili was decent. Everything on our plates just lacked real flavor and felt like it had been sitting out all day. This place really reminds me of Mi Tierra in San Antonio or Casa Bonita in Denver before the renovation. There is a serious lack of quality control with the food, and as you walk around the restaurant, there are layers upon layers of dust on many surfaces. It makes you wonder how clean the kitchen is. And it was sad to see the dust in the cages of the birds. Do they ever see the sunlight and get fresh air? The bathrooms were highly unsanitary with dirty toilets, wet floors, and overflowing trashcans. This place has a ton of potential, but it seems like they are riding the wave of nostalgia and repeat customers without any care for quality food and a clean environment. We...
Read moreMy complaint is on those poor birds. I am a experienced parrot owner with many years of proper care under my belt with a specific focus on nutrition and geriatrics (I own 14 and do lots of volunteering in the state) . The birds were filthy. No water spritzing going on or showers. I put my finger ( clean) in ALL the water bowls and the water bowls were absolutely slimy which clearly indicates to me that all they do is refill the water and not clean the dishes and there’s tons of deadly bacteria harbored in it . That is neglectful and UNSAFE. It is how they get gut infections, bacterial infections and DIE I say DIE because if you can’t even change the water and clean the bowls daily , I think it’s fair to say that you are NOT taking them to the vet for regular check ups . Also, the only thing in their dishes was sunflower seeds, which is not a balanced diet and is very harmful for a parrot. It causes atherosclerosis and they Die. So if they don’t die from contaminated water, they’ll die because of only sunflower seeds being their diet. They are supposed to have 80 % pellets and 20% fruits and vegetables. giving seed very sparingly. If you are going to be showing off these birds, please be responsible by caring for them the proper way. This is tragic, heartbreaking and appalling for anyone that knows anything about parrots. DO BETTER 😡
In response to your post .. no veterinarian on this planet would be OK with slimy water dishes growing bacteria for any animal. Your birds are not being given fresh water daily. You are not cleaning the bowls. You are refilling them without washing them, which is causing the slime to be all over the bowls. Your birds are filthy and need a bath. No vet ( most definitely NOT Dr Calista ) would approve of only sunflower seed for a balanced diet ( that’s all that was in those bowls and also EMPTY with only the shells remaining ) Maybe I should call a Local vet to come in there and see for themselves? I know quite a few. Im sure they would love to see photos. Again, do better ma’am. You are...
