It took the Double Eagle an hour and a half to present our seated party of 3 with dinner. Some of it was great, but much of it was pretty bad.
We picked this spot for my wife’s birthday, and it was a huge let-down. I am left thinking that we really should not return, and that makes me sad.
There were red flags from the start. The hostess couldn’t manage a smile, and her tone of voice was so quiet that only one of us could just barely hear her say “Follow me, please” as she walked away - she very nearly had to come back for us. We were seated shortly after our reservation time, but it took several minutes for the bus boy to show up to fill our water glasses, and he apologetically mentioned that he was on his own in the restaurant that night. We’d had about 20 minutes with our menus by the time the waiter showed up.
The appetizers took a little while to show up but at least they were very tasty, and by then we’d managed to get a wine list, followed by a decent Chardonnay at a decent price, for a restaurant. Things were looking up, or so I thought, until (after another half hour) our waiter dropped by to explain that our entrees were being plated, but he had to cook something tableside for other customers, so someone else would be bringing our food out very soon.
Plating food must be more complicated than I realized, as that took quite a while too. When the first attempt at entrees did finally arrive, my wife’s pan-seared Sea Bass “with lemon caper and white wine sauce” came without capers or sauce. The medium-rare steaks my son and I had ordered looked black and shriveled. I cut mine open to find it a solid gray, through and through. Both steaks were very much well-done.
I guess we piled our concerns on the waiter pretty quickly and he immediately suggested that he go get the manager (we hadn’t asked for that). The very young lady who next showed up seemed flummoxed. By then my wife had been given a small tub of some congealed mass with three capers in it, ostensibly to fix her fish. The manager instructed her on how to apply that and reassured us that three capers was the normal amount. Did I want to send the steak back? I had to point out that we’d already waited for well over an hour and asked how long it would take. The answer was a shrill “I don’t know. Ten minutes? Do you want me to take it back?”
Both steaks went back. When the replacements showed up 20 minutes later, mine was almost raw, and the “steak compliments” we’d ordered were getting cold, but I was starving, and just ate. At least my son’s replacement steak was a proper medium rare. By then we’d also figured out that my wife’s Sea Bass had been in the restaurant for too long. Sea Bass generally doesn’t taste particularly fishy, unless it is old. This was quite fishy.
Obviously we didn’t stay for coffee or dessert. At no point did we ask that anything be comped, but given the obvious problems the waiter (after volunteering that he was limited by policy to comping no more than 10%) proactively worked with the manager to get a couple of entrees taken off the bill.
I left a pretty good tip, in the end. I don't think the current mess at the Double Eagle is the wait staff’s fault. I had been offered any reservation slot from 6:15 or later, for that night, and clearly the Double Eagle had the tables, but didn’t have the staff to serve our small party. Whoever is acting as head chef now clearly has a very low bar for quality. After such an odd exchange with that evening’s restaurant manager, I actually had to ask the waiter if we’d spoken to the real manager. He assured me that she had a bachelor’s degree (I’m not sure why that would reassure me).
The Double Eagle used to be pretty awesome, IMO. I am not sure what has gone wrong but I won’t be tempted to try it again, especially for a special occasion,...
Read moreWe used to consider this restaurant duo a good choice for a nice date night. On the 8th of August, we expected to be able to enjoy such a night. The waitress had served us before and done a very good job. That night was a different story. When we ordered we asked to order for our five year old and have that order put in right away because it was seven pm and he was hungry. She did that but then took about 15 minutes to come back and get the rest of our order. The food took longer than average to get to our table but not so much that it upset us. What did upset us was that her fajita plate only had four medium chunks of chicken, and the beans had a film on them, signifying that they were old. Our sons beans were the same way and he refused to eat them. When questioning the chicken, we were told that that dish is always like that. We see from other reviews that this is true and that it tends to upset the diners. Four chunks of meat for 3 make your own fajitas? When we finished our meal, we figured that it would take the usual five minutes or so to get our check. Overall, we waited almost thirty minutes, during which time, the waitress didnt even come back to check on us. At one point, my wife took my son on a small walk because he was getting restless. Understand, it is almost 8:30 by this time. The waitress finally came over and explained that the POS system was down, they were trying to get it working, but didnt know how long it would take. In the meantime, they could cash us out the old fashioned way. We decided to go that route, which took another 15 minutes, during which time, the host told me that he couldnt take our card as he wasnt supposed to touch the bills.(at least he checked on us). As I was waiting to get the flimsy back, my wife said that she has asked to speak to the manager, but she was in the main dining room calming customers down. Granted, we were in the Peppers dining room, but our money is just as important. Once we got to the point that we could actually pay, my wife sent me to the car with our son and she waited for them to actually finalize the bill and let her talk to a manager. She waited almost another 15 minutes for a bar manager to take $2.59 off the bill(we didn't ask for a discount, but under the circumstances, $2.59; really??) She was told that that was the best he could do and she would have to bring it up to the general manager the next day.
The next day we both called the general manager. He was completely indifferent to our concerns about spending an extra hour in his establishment and didnt feel anything other than an apology was necessary. I was told more than once, "i dont know why they freaked out, this has happened before" and "They are trained to handle this type of thing." Then, when my wife spoke to him, and asked what he intended to do to compensate us for the hour that was wasted in his restaurant, he told her, "sometimes life isnt very fair and we have to deal with it"(paraphrased). Now, I am a long time manager in the service industry and if one of my people spoke to a customer like that in my store, they would not have a job. Going to the root cause of the problems at Double Eagle/Peppers is simple. There is zero leadership there. I have to question why he was not there that night if his staff was struggling so with a simple POS outage? Why did they not know how to make sure their customers were taken care of with a smile and a solution? It is because of this type of leadership that we will no longer be coming to this establishment and will pass our opinion along to those people close to us. What happened that night and the subsequent attitude of the GM there is...
Read moreWent to Double Eagle for our 13th Anniversary and was extremely disappointed with our experience. Our server was very very nice, but that's about all the good I have to say. I don't like leaving bad reviews, so I've been going back and fourth on whether or not to post this at all. But im so disappointed. The food made me sad. I ordered the filet mingon and my husband got the elk rack. Both of us ordered our meat medium and both came out almost blue rare. I ate my steak anyways even though it was very underdone, but husband hardly ate his elk, it was barely edible. The exact words out of his mouth after the first bite was "I'm going to try and choke this down because we're paying so much for it, but it's not good" We don't go out and treat outselves often. Especially these days with the cost of living and everything being so expensive. But 13 years together we said why not its something to celebrate. We don't like complaining when things go south, we both worked in the service industry, we know how it is and wasnt the servers fault and they always get the brunt of bad interactions. We didn't want to make it a huge thing. But to spend over $50 a person to have it be not just mediocre, but bad, it was super disappointing. We did let our server know and for the kitchen to be aware what happened, and we got a $6.55 discount off the bill. Not a typo, six dollars and fifty five cents off of a $132 tab. For context, his elk dish was $45. Another thing, I ordered a berry mule, and first one was great. When I ordered another, I was given the wrong drink the 2nd time around. I would have sent it back for the right drink, but my server towards the end of the meal had disappeared for a while, so I never got the chance to do so. At that point after being disappointed with dinner and waiting so long for them to come back to check on us, we just wanted to get out of there and go home to salvage the rest of our night. We spent over $162.69 on dinner, tip included which was generous considering how disappointing it was, and felt like the experience did not match the price. In fact, we've been here before and things were great. Not sure what happened or when it started going downhill, but we won't be back. We spent the whole car ride home, in disbelief on how much we spent, and what a poor experience we had. And the true lack of service to try and make anything better. I get it, it gets busy, and mistakes happen. But its about how its handled after to fix an experience, that really makes or breaks a place. That causes repeat customers and good word of mouth buzz. Double Eagle however dropped the ball. It actually made me sick to my stomach feeling like we wasted our money on what was supposed to be such a special night. Super disappointing, and unfortunately will be a most memorable night, in the most sad and...
